My 86 Cutlass needs new tires it has 14 inch American Racing wheels that are pretty nice. The tires that are on it are 215/70/14's I want to goto a bigger I was thinking maybe 225/70's in the rear and 205/70's in the front. Has anyone gone with a bigger 14 then that? It just looks so wimpy with those little tires. Strauss wanted to sell me 195/70's but those are like bicycle tires.

Two combos I have seen to look good and work well. First if you want a wider tire and to keep it shorter to help out the already too tall factory gearing their is 205/70/14 ie 25.4" tall up front with 245/60/14 25.6" tall in the rear. This is a little wide in the rear if you only have 6" wide rims but your american raceing may be wider. If you only have 6" rims you should get the best fit/wear with 26 to 28 psi on the rears.

The other combo is 215/70/14 25.9" tall in the front and 225/70/14 26.5" tall in the rear. Actually you could also do 225s all the way around to keep the ability to rotate. I like the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s. I just saw on tire rack that they have a $50 coupon when you buy four of these tires. www.tirerack.com Aside from tire rack I have gotten the best prices from Wall Mart or Sams club. 14s suck their is just not much to choose from but when you are working with what you got this seems to be good as it gets.

BTW Factory size on generic gbodys was only 195/75/14 ie 25.5" tall and on the GN/Ttype/442/MCSS/2+2 215/65/15 ie 26.0"

I'm going to change gears a little down the road so hight isn't to much of a concern. Has anyone tried a 245/70? Or does it not exhist?

I believe 225/70/14 is as tall as they make unless maybe in a whitewall 75 series tire. 245/60/14 btw is a tenth taller than the stock 195/75/14 and 7 or 8 tenths taller than that puny 195/70/14 they were trying to sell you.

You are really limited to what you can do with a 14" rim, I had those and decided to do 15" rims because I wanted a certain look, I got BFG 255/60/15 on a 15X8 rim in the back and 215/65/15 on a 15X7 in the front. If you do decide to change the rims to 15 be real careful about the backspacing, mine are 3.75 backspaced all around and work fine with no rubbing issues, First I ordered 4.5 backspace and there was no clearance behind the rear wheel and the frame. I really like the looks of a lower profile tire like a 60 or 50 rather than a 70 series tire, I thik they look too tall. I have seen G-bodies with 17" rims and I think it may be what people go to in the near future, it looks pretty cool, depends on the look you want
