I recently swapped my 305 for a LT1 out of a 93 Camaro I have the engine and trans bolted up. The computer and wiring harness should arrive any day now. One thing I forgot to look into is if I will need to change out my gas tank and fuel lines. My car is a 78 Malibu 2 door had a carbed 305 in it.

How does the undercarriage look underneath your car. If it is heavily rusted, depending on what part of the country your in, then you might want to replace them. I got away with just disconnecting them and blowing them out with an air gun. They should work just fine with the LT1 motor. Do you have an electric fuel pump for it as well?

Another really important thing you need to know deals with that return line that runs on top of the frame on the drivers side of the engine bay. It is normally hooked up to the charcoal canister. This can be utilized as a return fuel line to your gas tank. THE PROBLEM is that towards the back of the gas tank at the top of the sending unit (I forget where exactly) there is a brass reducer in the line that WILL cause your gas line to rupture and is well known for causing car fires. I did a holley projection kit on my engine once and luckily another buddy of mine informed me of this brass fitting before it was too late (thank god). Overall I hated the kit and went back to simple carbs. But I'm not sure if the LT motors utilize a return line or not.

the under carriage is fairly rust free. I am going to be using a electric pump mounted in the engine compartment. That canister line is already hooked up as my return line. I am just curious if my original tank can hold up to the higher psi of a fuel injection system

Mine did just fine and I'm using the factory sending unit. You shouldn't run into any problems just make sure that brass fitting is taken out of that return line.

Your best bet will be a tank, sending unit & lines from a TBI Monte Carlo. You can add the correct fuel pump and have a factory-fit setup 🙂 You can run the original tank, but it's not baffled. I'm pretty sure the LT1 is a return-style system, I would run new lines as well. If you really want it easy to service, use an OE filter for the same year LT1/car and mount it on the frame rail.
