I see quite a few threads on replacing an automatic trans with manual of different kinds. I realize that I will have to use a hydraulic clutch because the car has long tube headers. That is OK,no big deal. I have a real good Muncie 4-speed and am wondering if I will have shifter/ header interference problems because of the shifter being on the side of the transmission. I have a nice and fairly exspensive exhaust system on the car and would rather not have to redo it. Has anybody run into my problem already?

You dont necessarily "have to" use a hydraulic clutch.I dont,although we did cut and reweld the clutch Z bar to clear the headers.And there should be lots of clearance between the transmission/shifter and the exhaust.Heres a picture of how mine looks;

Since a Muncie mounts the shifter at the rear of the tail housing, a bench seat is out unless you use some kind of convoluted shifter handle to clear it, so you will need to have bucket seats. The shifter/rods still may hit the trans tunnel, but you can widen the tunnel for clearance. This is because the factory used a Saginaw trans that mounted the shifter about 6" forward of the usual spot, and this fits the tunnel and clears the base model bench seat. I and others here have done it and we all have our own preferences, but it is a doable and worthwhile project.

I run a muncie with the mechanical clutch and Hedman husler 65218 long tube headers. Best thing I ever did yo the car
