rear end is out of a GN, 3.42 posi. He told me he torqued down the bearings down to tight and they let go. he also said the posi still works. he only wants $375 but maybe i can talk him down to $350. is it worth it??? im sure it needs a total rebuild.

Try to get him to $300 if possible. But I would say its worth $350 8) As long as the posi unti and axles are still good

i have an 8.5" in my 85 SS and heard a clicking sound. this is just a word of advice. make sure the bolt holding the pin in isnt snapped. mine was. i had to take the rear out and have someone take get the bolt out. i couldnt fit any of my tools in there. problem is you have to take the cover off then turn the unit around until you see the, if i remember right, a 10mm bolt. it should be locktited in and you will have to use that locktite again when u replace it. in NY it cost me about $100 to get it done. this bolts snaps when someone does too many donuts with the car. it also causes your trailing arms to twist. mine were and i had them straightened and boxed.

1988 was the last year for any G body. That axle is at least 26 years old. You will put a thousand dollars into it before long. Take the cover off and look for any damage or rust inside. If it looks OK and you can get the axle for $450, and pay no shipping, this is a deal. Ring and pinon is $200, install kit with bearings and seals is $120, posi rebuild is about $300 or a new Auburn posi is about $450. New axle shafts are about $250. On the other hand, a reasonably built Ford 9" is about $2000+. So, decide what your upper limit will be. I can tell you that there are a dozen Forum members who would buy this from you later if you decide it's too rich for you.
