Recently picked up another monte, this one is going to be used as a weekend driver and will remain as close to stock as possible. Anyway it is a 1988 Monte SS with t-roof, black with gray interior. The car is basically stock except for the wheels , tires, and radio. I took it to a local show this weekend which was judged on points and I recieved a third place trophy. I was really surprised and happy to win a trophy. Other more experienced owners there said I should have shown my car in a modified class rather then the stock class and I would probably have done better. They said I lost points because of the non original wheels, tires and radio. Any thoughts on which class I should go into next time?

I guess we dont have to many show car guys here. can anyone direct where to go to get an answer to this question?

No one can really answer that. I guess every car show is different, and there are always different classes, determined by whoever runs the show. So your best bet is to talk to the guys who run the show.

Based on the info you gave, if you go to the same show, next time enter it into a modified class. If it's a different show, that's a whole different story..

had a similar situation except in reverse last year. Entered into "mod" class due to my cal hood, ss spoiler (on a ls) and a few other non-original parts including the audio system. didnt place in the mod class and some guys told me i should have entered in the stock class and i could have placed top 3. guess if i enter another judged show i'll go stock, but then again, damned if i do damned if i dont kinda thing. i just do small local shows/ fund raisers so not a big deal to me, this year i just cruised into a few shows and didnt even give my info.... maybe this is a sign saying you shold mod your car some more so that way you can win in the mod class!

i did car shows for years. they all had different rules. most would alloy 2 or 3 modifications in original restored classes. i always prefered judged shows. partipant judged shows are a joke. clubs and groups would get together and vote for ther own cars. you get rusted out beaters winning first place in a class. alot of the shows now are going to the top 50 cars get a trophy. each entry can vote for 5 cars. like any participant judged show you get groups of people voting for each other. top shows aren't very good for original cars. people like to vote for the biggest motors and most chrome. it is hard to find a judged show anymore. it is alot easier and less work for the show committee to do a top show. i haven't been to a show since i did all the mods to my monte carlo. modified classes can be tuff. anything goes. original classes are easier if you have a clean car. if you think aout it there isn't that much in late 70's thru 80's in original condition.

Car shows can be, and usually are very political and full of opinion. Hey, if the people putting the show on want their club members to win, then they probably will. I've done car shows at the very top level of the day (SSCA) and the local club shows with Good Guys shows in between. One thing is for certain, every person looking at your car or mine has an opinion. Not necessarily one we want to hear, but an opinion none the less. That said, here’s the outlook I have on this these days.

No matter how much research you do on your car, there’s going to be some knuckle dragger and their pet chimp muttering “that isn't right or this isn't correct”, “I don’t like that or why’d he do that etc”’. The only way I’m listening to any of that is if they’re paying me to build the car. Otherwise, there’s a car genius born every minute and they’re like, well, you know what they’re like.

With that, I’ll give you my opinion; If you're gonna play stock, then your car ought to be stock. Everyone’s hot rod has a different flavor but stock is all interpretations of the same flavor or essentially how it was baked. There’s no creative license on a stock restoration, only iterations of the completeness or detail of the restoration.

If you want to change the wheels, radio and add a spoiler, change the stuff, make the car what you want, not what everyone else thinks it should be. Enjoy the day and opportunity to spend the afternoon with your friends. Screw the car geniuses, truth be told, they probably don’t even have a car. …

Scott. ...
