I'm looking for some input on motors. I currently have a sbc 350 with th 350 trans and stock rear in my 84 regal. I want to upgrade the motor but I've been all over the place exploring different options. I'd like to have around 400-425 hp, something streetable but I could take to track if I wanted. I have a gn rear to put in also. What would be a good platform to start with to achieve this, economical if possible?

i read an article in car craft that supposably you can build a350 with aluiminum heads for just over 1000. bucks? i wonder how reliable it would be .they claim they got close 400 horse.

400-425 crank horsepower is easily achievable with a tame daily driver using the sbc platform. If you are planning on a complete rebuild I would go with a mild 383. It is done daily so there are plenty of recipes out there for your needs.

If you just want to build on yours then a good set of heads, dart pro1, AFR 195, Brodix IK's, etc are all really good heads. I would invest in a hydraulic roller set up. You will have to spin the motor a touch to get that power and most of your power will be in the mid-upper rpm range. Still plenty streetable but it will for sure have a lopey cam and require a stall and gears. Before any of this though you need to know what your dumping your money into. Tear down and inspection of the engine would be advised unless you already know the history of the engine.
