If your a fan of HRM's Roadkill, or a subscriber to Hot Rod Magazine or Motortrend, you've definitely heard about Motor Trend on Demand at this point. If you are frugal like me, you've probably been holding off on subscribing to Motor Trend on Demand, but secretly wondering what it's like and if it's worth it. I finally got lured in to it yesterday with the promise of getting to see the 50th Episode of Roadkill early. It was 5.99, and is 5.99 a month for basic subscription. Here's my take on it.
I got the app for IOS devices and I will say it is rather easy to figure out and user friendly. I did get to view the next episode of roadkill early, as promised. However I'm still not convinced my purchase was worth it. Their sales pitch 'It's Netflix for car guys' is wayyy too generous. Not nearly. The motor sports section is all weird European racing and motorcycle racing, two things I'm not interested in at all. The 'originals' section is probably the best part of the whole thing, as it includes Roadkill,Dirt Every Day, Engine Masters, Hot Rod Garage and the MTOD exclusive "Roadkill Garage". I personally am not a fan of Hot Rod Garage since Tony Angelo took over, he's just not a personality I find entertaining. Engine Masters is okay, and Roadkill Garage is good, but Steve Dulcich needs to go, he is awkward and weird in front of the camera. There are some other shows in the 'originals' section but none worth watching IMO. The movies and TV section is a bust. There's a bunch of low-budget, no name shows and movies in there.
My final consensus is- unless you really like Roadkill Garage or your really into European rally racing, MTOD is a waste. I'm not going to renew my subscription. I was pretty disappointed, personally. Also 5.99 a month isn't cheap.
I really hate when companies start off with a really great inexpensive product/program, and then turn it into something like this. They try to upsell you into a more premium version, and in reality it isn't much better. Hot Rod had a really great show that everyone liked, and they couldn't leave well enough alone. They got greedy and had to try and squeeze every last cent out of it by making a few more dumb shows and selling it as a better version. I think it shows a lack of respect towards the viewers and consumers, thinking they will just follow you around from product to more expensive product like lost dogs. Just one man's opinion.
