I went to the local Gm (Chevy) dealer for a door latch the other day (Not available from the aftermarket) for my other truck, not my El Camino. Anyway... The Parts guy wanted to charge me $128.00! I told him that I had my own business up North (Showed proof) and retired down here a short time back. I also told him that I'm still doing repairs, mostly on Friends and neighbors cars and trucks (I work on motorcycles and Street-Rods too). Thinking that the dealership would be happy to get my business and that I will gladly pay the sales tax, you would think that I'd get some kind of discount!
Hey, even Home Depot and Loews gives me 10% off, just for being a Veteran!
When I lived in R.I., everyone would receive some kind of a discount at the parts store!
Lets see, I have an 85' El Camino, 85' Chevy Stepside, a 96' Dually and I build motors... That's a lot of revenue!
Oops, I forgot... This is St. Lucie County Florida, where everything here is all about the money!

PS: F**K them... My Northern buddy is sending me the part from my old Chevy dealer and even with postage included, I still save $20.00... It's just the principal!
Just my (Aggravated) two cents....OK, Time for my Meds!

Sorry to hear that. I hate it when vendors don't tell me I'm special and automatically give me discounts just because I've built a few cars. FWIW, it's all about the money everywhere  . If you're relatively new in town you'll need to establish some relationships to get discounts. Simply announcing that you used to have a business in another state probably isn't going to automatically get you any special treatment.
Just my (honest) two cents...Enjoy your meds 😀 .

Think that's bad? I run a gm parts dept for a small dealer, I called up the local Volvo dealer for a part, even made their life easy by supplying a part number, they charged us retail. It's ok, if they ever call me for parts, I'll get them back for that  . Just for the record, the other shop I work has experienced the same thing from that same Volvo dealer. They're just dicks like that.

Our local Volvo/Mercedes/Jaguar dealer was famous for giving shops a discount...after they marked up the list price. Usually worked out to about 3-5% off list...all the while whining about how we were practically starving them to death by giving us 25 off. We buy a LOT of parts from 90 miles up the interstate, and get better service to boot.

Some times business is busy tripping over dollars to pick up nickels and they don't even know it.

While I could not agree more about most of the dealerships being terrible to deal with..... I'm really not understanding what your reason was for expecting a discount??
I mean, don't flame me..... I'm just asking. Any dealership I've ever dealt with, here's the part and this is the price. You either pay the price for the part or you go somewhere else. Unless you have an account with them. Complete with your tax ID number on file.

i own a business and understand why some people don't get a discount.i get tons of people in here telling me how much they will buy if i give them i discount and never see them again.BUT on the other hand i do give a vets discount no matter what....shame on them if they don't.for pete's sake you vets risk your life for us

i know for a fact that some dealers are watched close so that they keep the pricing to standards set by the manufacturer.
i have to provide a fed id # and tax # to get my vendors to give me discounted parts pricing

i feel for you but they run a business for profit and they probably get a lot of people asking for discounts.......

There is a 300% markup on the parts, lol i know that a gm dealer just in town gives NAPA or sells NAPA the delivery cars and one has all the NAPA markings on it and the other is just the car.The one with no NAPA signs is for gm them to get parts from NAPA to put on you car in there shop lol.
I know this because a good friend works at NAPA for a good few years now.And when you think your getting the best of the best   lol

I've only ever had good experiances with Napa. the one in my local are I have been buying from for the past 3-4 years. It kinda sucks that I don't get a discount because last year alone since september 2011 I've bought about $1500+ in parts for my 94 f150 and abou 1000 for 90 s10 and 500 for my gimmy. Plus possibly another $200 (hopefully will only need to buy plugs so it'll be $40) for my protege and a couple of odds and end for my cutlass and I still don't get a discoutn even though they know me by name.

The only bad experiance I had with them was getting a price check on a sending unit and fuel pump for my s10. The one in my local area of Morell said it would be 200 and over night. I called back two weeks later when I got paid and they said nope it's $500 and they kept lookign up the one that had fuel tank, sending unit and pump.

So I went to the one in my current town of Summerside and they were able to fidn the one I was looking for and even called the supplier and found me a pump and sending unit that make the price $30 than the one I got the first time from Napa in morell

I mainly do autobody, so when you go to the paint & supply shops, they want a company name or they refuse to sell to you. Since I don't own a business, I primarily do stuff for family and friends, I give them the name of a buddy's shop that had been out of business for over 20 years. They know his shop is gone, but they don't care, as long as I provide a name. Kinda screwy to me, but whatever they say.
