So I stumbled across a 78-83 carb'd turbo setup at the swap meet this weekend for a really good price. It comes with everything except except the carb/air cleaner and crossover pipe. I got to thinking about what the swap would involve and what else I would need to do this swap.

Has anyone on here done the swap? I here that it may have problems clearing the hood.

I'm not sure if there will be hood clearance issues but if there are, a domed turbo hood from a 78-80 2 door regal will fit if a 4 door regal you change the hinges too. And if you are in need of a carb I have one from a 79 turbo Riv (turbo carbs are different than NA carbs). I also have the air cleaner assembly from the Riv too that may work. Hope you also got the exhaust manifolds, distributor and Turbo control center box with it as they can be tough to find and arent avaliable new. Any good muffler shop should be able to fab up a crossover and a down pipe for you.

I always wondered if the 78-80 hoods fit the later 4 doors. They look the same.

I did not buy any of the setup, but I talked with the guy and got his number. It did not include the turbo control box or air cleaner. It does come with all the manifolds. As for the distributor, I think the only differences are the ignition modules inside. I just bought a new distributor for a '78 Buick 231 non turbo a few months ago, and it came with a 4 pin module, but there was also a 5 pin available. I think the 5 pin is for the turbo distributor, correct me if I'm wrong.

There is another plug with several wires that come out of the turbo dist. they go to the turbo control center box. Here is a pic of that connector on one I used to have.
