Need some input from the Olds guys. Ran across an ad on CL that has this one photo. Seller claims that they know nothing about it and make an offer before it's scrapped. Any way to determine what it is without making the 3hr round trip? I'm guessing late 70s by the blue paint. Beyond that I have no clue.
have them get the number off the heads & intake, as well as on the block near the oil fill neck. it's definately late 70's or early 80's by the manifolds and smog crap..might be a 260
yes def older engine, but i think it is a v8. i believe i see 4 spark plug's on this side.that bracket for the alternator is the same i have on my 403,but i guess they can be interchangeable.
5L on the side of the block is a 307. 403 is a 403, some have an X too. 350 is obivious, big numbers cast into the later blocks. Number one and number eight will have a number or letter on the heads. As said behind the water pump, beside the oil fill tube will have the engine casting numbers. Thinking 307 because of the air tubes but 350's and 403's could also come with them. Different pass side manifold, Tornado engine maybe?
Just a guess but I'm thinking it's gotta be either a 260 or 307.
Personally I wouldn't make a 3 hour drive to pick up either one of those unless I just absolutely needed one.
I can't get a response from the seller about casting numbers. The more research I do the more it looks like it's probably a 307. I was really hoping someone would say, "Because it has *** and is shaped like *** it is without a doubt a 403." That's really the only engine I'd be willing to travel for. Thanks for the help anyway guys.
On a side note, I was contacted by an acquaintance (boss's buddy) last week about an Olds 350 he was trying to unload. When I first talked to him it was supposedly complete and rebuilt (never run) for a jet boat and even included a "high rise" aluminum intake and some extra heads. He said I could probably get it for scrap value. He called me again yesterday to come over and look at it. I was expecting a complete engine on a stand. What I found was an upside-down webbed main shortblock half wrapped in a trash bag, some 5a heads in a water soaked cardboard box packed in wet newspaper, 3 random and different bigblock heads, a cast iron Q-jet intake with part of a carb, a severely corroded Edelbrock dual plane intake, a rusted up points distributor, and a couple random valve covers. It was all in the back of a pickup under a tarp and had been there for at least a year. The asking price once I got there...$750 . Thanks, but no thanks.
