Hi All,

This is my first post on the forum so I apologize if it drags on

I've acquired a project which I have been working on the last month or so to get it running right, finally think I've got it but I'm still plagued by 2 issues which I assume are related. First being the vehicle will not crank when in neutral position and the second issue is that when I turn on my dash lights I get a warning chime. I assume this is my neutral safety switch but oddly enough the reverse lights still come when reverse is engaged? Any help would be appreciated

#1: is the car a console shifter car, or a column shift car? does the key turn all the way to the "start" position, or stops part way to start?

if it stops part way in a console shift car, it means the rod that goes from the column to the transmission for the ignition key lock is out of adjustment. if the key does turn all the way on either style shifter car, then it may just be a bad neutral safety switch.

#2: is the ignition switch off when you hear the chime?if it is, then it's just a reminder chime. if it isn't, then you may have a short, or a bad ground somewhere, causing a feedback.

some others may chime in with other answers, as the usual suspects may not always be the culprits...

welcome to the site btw!

1evilregal Thanks for the info
#1: car is console shifter and when in neutral it wont get to start position stops at on I suspected the switch might be out of adjustment I'll have to refresh on how to adjust shouldn't be hard

#2: car chimes in started and in off position (which I'd expect) but only when dash lights are turned on I've got all the wiring diagrams so might be a good place to start or possibly like you said the dimmer switch has a bad ground

my console car does the same thing wit the neutral start... there's a rod on the steering shaft, just below the master cylinder, follow that down to the transmission and you'll see a bolt locking it to the shifter cable linkage. you can make the adjustment there. it is pretty sensitive, and I haven't been able to keep my fustration level down enough to get it dialed in.
