ok im going to have a friend of mine help me assemble my engine, a 1970 olds 350,,but he has never delt with an olds only chevy, is there some things that i need to be aware of that he might miss?..also i am having problems deciding on what rockers to get. what would be a good purchase, i understand a full roller would be best due to less friction but would just a roller tip work fine? the reason im asking is that i am doing my first build and dont want to get in the rut of paying more when there is something out there that does the same thing for cheaper. if there is any info to be given please help lol..thanks

well the first question is what kind of performance are you looking for.
also purchase a book on olds engines, so you can have complete reference. as far as the rocker arms go, if you are looking for a stock performing motor just get some stock stamped steel ones the are very forgiving, roller tips are better and full rollers/jesel are the best, BUT REMEMBER YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR so don't buy cheap rockers are parts make sure you get good ones the first time.

can i get a book at like napa or something, i actually have one for chevy i got like 8 yrs ago thats very detailed but i could not find an address or anything on the book at all to see if i could get one for olds..the rockers i was trying to get an answer on the difference were between comp cams magnum steel roller tips, and the pro magnum roller rockers, the pros being a full roller rocker, but the guy who is helping me said the 2-3 hp gain from the full roller would not be noticed..so thats why im trying to ask on here..even though hes built alot of engines i wanted to get feed back first..thanks again

check your local book store, you may find them at napa also...both roller rockers buy comp are good, the full roller are better and stabilize the valve train better easier to adjust and you won't have any issues with them. but there not worth it is you are just adding roller rockers. what kind of numbers are you wanting for your motor?

well i told the shop i wanted 400 hp from the motor so he built it with that in mind..its kinda hard to have more than one person tell you different things being this is my first build. but i never make a decision without research first.

A really good book on the Olds V-8 is at your local GM dealer, about $24.
"Mondello, Oldsmobile V-8 Engine, Technical Reference Manual".

I would just stay with stock, you won't notice a difference with roller tipped rockers.

How much of the engine is assembled?

The best roller rockers for an Olds motor are the Harlan Sharp rockers that have a common shaft between the intake and exhaust. rockers. These bolt to the existing 5/16" holes in the heads and don't require pushrod guide plates.
