I hope I'm posting this in the right forum section. I'm looking for someone who understands GM parts catalog listings. I have an '88 Caprice, and I have the GM parts catalog for the car. I'm trying to find the parts group that has a listing for door sill plates. Can anyone here point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

1708510 for 2 door. 1708512 for 4 door fronts. for both B and C bodies. 1708514 for the 4-door rears on B body. 1708516 for 4-door rears on C body.

They make reproductions of the 2 door versions.

Found in Group 11 (sometimes shown as Gp. 11). Which is "Body Group- Rear Glass, Seat Parts, Adjuster." Subgroup is 11.175 for front sill plates, and 11.179 for rear sill plates. Listed as "PLATE". The thing to watch for is they also had the little "body by fisher" insert listed as a PLATE also, so watch for that. The insert automatically comes with the sill plate.

There's a GM rhyme and reason for the way they broke down grouping of parts and mostly it makes sense, but sometimes it's hard to decipher why they did what they did.

Also, the catalog may and does contain mistakes, which aren't always known. One thing that I know for sure was a mistake is that the 86 Cutlass outside sport mirrors was supposed to change over and get the Monte Carlo style wedge mirrors as well as getting the 87-88 euro nose front end. But that got cancelled at the last minute, and the catalogs for years had the part number for one of the mirror glass pieces the same as the wedge mirror glass. Also, the illustration books showed the 87-88 euro nose header and other parts for the 86 (and sometimes earlier). Even the early dealer literature showed the Salon and 442 still having the wedge mirrors but an airbrushed front end to remove the aero nose. They went back and tried to fix the mirrors on later brochures:

Wedge.

More airbrush later, version 2. They worked on the passenger side a bit but left the driver side. Note in both versions, the "Oldsmobile" front emblem on the Salon is airbrushed on near the bottom of the bumper cover. Since there were holes pre-punched, it's obviously painted in the wrong place. And the 442 front bumper is showing chrome. Color is slightly off from the painted silver on the fender. Plus, contrary to popular belief, the 442 did not come with a painted upper bumper cover flap cover for the bumper screws because they didn't make any. They put on a front plate holder instead. It's nit-picky, I know, but still.

Thank you very much! I spent a long time going through the catalog, trying to figure out what group the sill plates are in. Its a very big book, as I'm sure you're well aware. I spent 16 years as a GM dealer tech, and in that time, I got familiar with their part numbering system, but not as good as a full-time parts counter guy. You're right-sometimes their way of grouping parts doesn't make sense.
Interesting information on the Cutlass mirrors and nose. I didn't know that. I wonder if the difference in the styling of those cars with the different nose and mirrors would have made a difference in sales?
