I was driving my 86 cutlass 442 and my gas gauge pegged. later I realized my taillights weren't working either. I got out and checked, my taillights,my rear marker lights, and license plate lights weren't working. I Checked and my reverse lights weren't working either. However my turn signals, and brake lights are working. The rest of my gauges work fine and my headlights and front marker lights work fine. any ideas what is wrong. any help would be greatly appreciated.

H/O442GN,
The symptoms you describe sounds lke a broken ground follow your harness from the back seat to where it goes to the rear
lights (usually on the driver sidein the trunk) The harness could have become unplugged or a ground wire has broken its eyelet and the rear electrics have become un grounded. Fuel gauge pegging out is usually no signal from tank or tank ground but it sounds like the entire harness became disconnected . dont forget the connector at the driver front kick panel where the entire harness plugs in . Hope this helps !
In the future you may want to post this type of inquiry in the Interior and Electrical section of the forum , lots of good guys always willing to help all over this site! Putting it in the proper area will get the folks more tuned to that catagory to help out.
Regards
Dave

Thanks for the help. I figured out that the harness is messed up. the rear has a short in it somewhere. I am going to replace the harness, I have access to a parts car that has a unmolested harness.
