Ok well a few days ago my brother bought this piece of sh*t 1986 Pontiac fiero as his daily driver, crapped out 48 hours later. The main issue is that this puts BOTH of our jobs in jeopardy and i JUST moved to a new area.

The car is an 86 pontiac fiero with a 2.8L, the problem is that it went from throwing code 42 to not running at all. I know what code 42 is and i've helped him diagnose the module/coil , dizzy, ECM and wiring harness. But the problem is so hard to even explain because the car was a ****ing dumpster fire to begin with. At first it ran super lean, then once my brother put a new coil/module on it and fixed a MASSIVE vacuum leak it ran super rich. Base timing was at least within range.

The distributor the car came with looked brand new, so i pulled the cap to inspect and found that the magnetic pickup was shattered???? :wtf: So now im just at a loss because even with the original distributor (found it in the trunk) it won't give any spark now. I was sure the pickup was why it wasn't giving spark but i guess not.

To make matters worse, when my brother first drove the car home a spark plug wire melted completely in half against the exhaust manifold, so that's why we replaced the module/coil. No prevail

I believe the ECM may be bad, so here's my question. Is there an older style HEI distributor with a vacuum advance that i can get online / local parts store that will bolt to this 1986 GM 2.8L ?????

Carb or EFI? I assume carb. The carbed 2.8 was pretty reliable. I ran a couple with no distributor issues.

All Fieros came from the factory with EFI. I've seen one carbed 2.8 swap though. I love Fieros.

Alright got it figured out and fixed, but holy damn.

The problems where....

Bad MAP sensor, MAF sensor and Idle air control valve

All of the vacuum lines that i instructed my brother to replace where broken, he lied to me about replacing them, pissed me off.

Lower intake was leaking, somebody RTV'ed it back on.

When cylinder 4s plug wire melted against the exhaust manifold the ICM/coil wen't bad.

Distributor was allowing spark scatter to happen, replaced it. The "new" cap/rotor button where also shot because when the pickup exploded in the distributor the previous owner had installed, it damaged the cap/rotor button. AND ALSO i believe this almost took out what drives the dizzy in this engine, because the gear looked like it had taken some level of exaggerated wear.

The cold start injector was constantly spraying, replaced it AND it's corresponding sensor.

Temp sending unit was bad too, but that was to my knowledge an unrelated issue.

So after basically rebuilding this turd it runs good, Yeesh. :blam:

I think one of the only sensors still hanging in there was the TPS, and the ECM was fine.

If the previous owner(s) didn't take care of it, there will be plenty of things to fix. At least you get to hear the excellent sound of that 2.8 now 😀
