I'm looking for any help on information about 78-81 malibus with standard transmissions. I met a guy at a local car show that had changed his car from a v6 3spd stick on the floor to a 350 v8 with a muncie 4spd. He said he had to cut the floor to fit the new setup. I'd like to know if i bought an original 4spd car with no drivetrain, could i put in a m21 and a big block without having to cut up the floors? Or possibly a 5 or 6spd? Would the vin # tell me whether it is an original 3spd or 4spd or do i need to look at data plate on the car? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

Since a BBC and manual transmission mounts using the same engine mounts and crossmember as a SBC then yeah, it will still hit the original transmission hole. Some of the TKO 5 speeds also use the same hole. Most 6 speeds have the floorpan hole located farther back.

I don't think the vin or data plate either one will show if it's an original manual car.

Muncie will not line up. Linkage is on the tailshaft housing. ( Too far back ) Saginaw linkage is on the main body housing & will line up. If you use a Muncie, you will have to move the shift linkage hole back & use bucket seats. I don't know if a shifter is made that will let you use bench seat or not.

😳 Opps, I fergot the Saginaw and Muncie linkage was in a differant location. It's been a long while sinceI dealt with a Saginaw.
