hi guys. great site been reading among the forums for a while now any ways...... im having a problem with my cutlass its an 86 supreme with a chevy 350 in it. when i start the car it kind of sounds like a helocopter and when givin gas it stalls. its was running fine till the car shut off due to a carburator leak and ever since then just hasnt been running. it idles really rough stalls when put in gear. what could the problem be?

a friend of mine had an extra carb so i put that on. just waiting for the battery to charge to try start it. ill let u guys know

Any luck?

none it wont even start now but i think its a timing problem. well i hope its a timing problem anyways its not back firing or anything from the carb so i really dont think its the timing it just wont start.

timing or if your distributer isnt lined up at 180 degrees or something. i really don't know a ton about that but you can mess that up to and have your timing way off even though you think it's right. we just had this issue with the malibu and turns out we were sold the wrong harmonic balancer for it so that was our problem

If it won't even start, you will need to check all of the basics before you start replacing parts unnecessarily. The basics are: Fuel, Spark and Compression- in that order. Make sure it has fuel by looking down the throat of the carb with the choke open and pumping the throttle bellcrank open and shut a few times. If fuel squirts from the accelerator pump, it has fuel and should start and run- but not necessarily well. After fuel, confirm that there is spark with either an inductive timing light or by holding a plug an inch or so from it's plug and seeing if the spark jumps the gap with the starter turning. Be careful and hold it with a well insulated tool so as to avoid a shock. Finally, there is compression. It usually is not the reason an engine refuses to start unless there is almost none at all ( for example: 50psi in all 8 cylinders), so save this for last. Even if 2 cylinders are dead it usually will run (like sh*t!) on the remaining six. After you check the basics to be sure you have these three, it is time to go into more detail and time the distributor, mess with the carb, etc.

Not Running Cutlass

Take cap off of distributor and see if the rotor turns when you crank it over, if it does not you have a baked timing chain and gear, as well as bent valves and pushrods because the gas could not get out of the cylinders when you kept cranking it over. This happened to my bosses truck and I had to fix it.

I had a similar issue with a 351W in a F150 once. It had munched the distributor gear and would not evenly spin the distributor shaft.
