If it won't even start, you will need to check all of the basics before you start replacing parts unnecessarily. The basics are: Fuel, Spark and Compression- in that order. Make sure it has fuel by looking down the throat of the carb with the choke open and pumping the throttle bellcrank open and shut a few times. If fuel squirts from the accelerator pump, it has fuel and should start and run- but not necessarily well. After fuel, confirm that there is spark with either an inductive timing light or by holding a plug an inch or so from it's plug and seeing if the spark jumps the gap with the starter turning. Be careful and hold it with a well insulated tool so as to avoid a shock. Finally, there is compression. It usually is not the reason an engine refuses to start unless there is almost none at all ( for example: 50psi in all 8 cylinders), so save this for last. Even if 2 cylinders are dead it usually will run (like sh*t!) on the remaining six. After you check the basics to be sure you have these three, it is time to go into more detail and time the distributor, mess with the carb, etc.
