i need some tech help on my 84 mc ss. currently it has the 350c transmission with lockup and the lock up doesn't work anymore. or so what i can tell when driving it. a while ago it used to kick in and out while cruising and pissed me off. since i did a donor motor swap last year (while i rebuild the original l69 with a heavy 700r4) i lost all tcc lockup. now i don't have a book or wiring diagrams for a computer controlled monte but what can i check out. my local transmission man said to check the brake switch and check for what power and what side of polarity in the harness going to the trans and check out the vacum switch that the computer also runs it off of.

the vacum switch i cant find, the rest i will do tommorrow. since i currently have the 350c pulled i have it hanging in my garage now till i sort this out. i ohmed the tcc solenoid at 23ohms but it didn't snap every time i gave it power. so i took it off the transmission and found that if i shook it then it would snap again. so thinking it was bad i bought a good used 1 on the way in the mail but since i took apart the current one and found under that clip and screen there is a tiny thimble like pin. the transmission guy said when the ignition is on that there should be 12v(+) going to the tcc solenoid and the ground side is activated by the computer. well, now that i think of it i have a few electrical connections that i didn't bother to hook up thinking they were un-needed emesions crap from when swaping motors.

on another thought, from what i can see on the tcc solenoid. all it does to operate the tcc is allow fluid psi to bleed off for tcc unlocked and stop fluid bleed of for lock up. i'm not a transmission guy and still taking alot in but thats what im thinking. so with the tcc solenoid pin sitting in its slot blocking fluid flow the tcc should be locked up and since its staying the same all the time now then the tcc now makes the converter a zero stall. which would explain why it is so hard now to do a footbrake burnout now(like i'm missing some plug wires  ) where as before i did the swap it could burn out with the old 140k mile 305 like a piece of cake.

all help is greatly appreciated, thank you. 🙂

The TCC clutch wires are pink and purple, and on a clear plastic connector. If the car has cruise control from the factory, the switch for these two wires will have a vacuum line on it and be above the brake light switch. If the car did not come with cruise, they plug in to the brake light switch. Either way, it's the same connector as GM did not put the cruise in the main harness (It has an add on subharness), so the dash harness uses the same connector either way.

thanks for the help. the monte did come with cruise but i have it off right now. i found the vacum/brake switch and will test it tomorrow since i just got the trans slapped in tonight. also, i don't recall where the vacum line hooks up since i pulled the cruise stuff for now. it needs manifold vaccum right?

The vacuum line to the switch is irrelevant to the TCC operation. It just cuts the cruise when you hit the brakes. If you do not wish to put the vac switch back in the car, you can just get a non-cruise brake light switch and install it. Everything will plug in like it was meant to be there.

ok. now i'm a little confused. i understand what you said about the vacum line and cruise but what controls the tcc? the cpu or is there a vac switch somewhere?

if it matters, the map sensor is plugged in but the 02 sensor along with some other cpu controlled emisions stuff is unplugged.

84 350 trans

the ecm controls the tcc, it looks at engine temp and speed to determine when to apply the clutch. if your tcc solenoid stays engaged when you come to a stop the engine will stall! it will crank up but as soon as you put it in gear it will stall i hope this helps you good luck
