I have been thinking about this for a while now. Say you have two computers and wanted to do a file transfer between them. You are not connected by a router, but you have a USB cable, and an Ethernet cable available to you. Could you just directly connect the computers together with one of these cables without a router in between and have access to the files of both machines-assuming no firewalls, etc. to impede it? I ask this because I am curious as to how you would load a movie or music file into a Netbook, most of which have no optical drive. I am considering getting one in a few months as it would be easier to carry around school than the 17 in laptop I have now, and would be a nice ultra-portable machine to use on the go.

If one of the machines has a auto switching nic you can use a standard patch cable, otherwise you would need to use a "crossover cable". Also both machines would need to have a static I.P. address on the same subnet.

You would be better off to buy a cheap router, the setup will vary depending on how you access the internet...........Why not buy a thumb drive with the money you save with bootleg movie downloads. 😀

I agree with that dirty white boy 🙂

Get a USB flash drive. You can get 8 gig ones for around 15 bucks.

WWAAAYYY easier than cross over cables and hubs.
