Hello everyone.

I'm currently looking at an 81 El Camino and was just wondering if there was anything that I should look for specifically when looking at it.

It could use a little body work. Has parking lot knicks and bumps here and there, a little bondo on the driver's side rear quarter and drivers door. The bottom of the passenger side fender up near the bumper is bent a little but looks to be an easy repair. Has all the trim except the badges on he fenders, but someone at some point decided to reattach some of the trim with screws instead of using adhesive or clips or whichever is normally used (I'm not sure on these, but I'm relatively sure drywall screws weren't stock lol), so it will need a few holes filled. As far as I can tell it's rust free. Someone has told me to check the back of the frame for rust as its fairly common, and it looked fine. The speedo doesn't work and needs a new cable and housing but he said that he can get one of those for about 20 bucks. It is a little wet in the passenger side floor but I've heard thats fairly common and is most likely a seal in the heater box, but it still makes me a little weary. The power steering pump also leaks a little. It also needs air conditioning pump, hoses and condenser, but that's not much of an issue until summer rolls around.

This would be my first project and don't want to get into something too nasty or expensive and it seems parts are easy to find and relatively cheap for the G bodies. I want something I can work on as I drive it and it seems to run fine. My main concerns with it are the leak and the bondo and some of the screw holes with the trim.

He's asking $1150 bucks for it, and is throwing in 2 bucket seats (out of a different car, not sure what), a 73 Camaro center console that he says fits nicely, brand new flamed valve covers and gaskets, a cowl hood scoop, door hinge kit, a new power steering pump, and some new interior door handles and window cranks.

Any thoughts or advice?

Any help is much appreciated.

Any g-body you get is going to need something or another. Check the whole frame, bottoms of the doors and floors for rust or rot. Look for a solid car #1. Take a magnet see if you can pick up any other body work. You'll want a solid foundation. I would keep looking and come back to him see if he'll take an offer.
