it originated from rat rodders, which i understand, a ratty old flat back car with rust on it, rusty steel wheels, some massive meat on those wheels and a car with open headers that shakes windows is pretty damn cool, but on a 15 year old tuner car? well it has accent the rest of the car, but on a nice shiny paintjob, i dont see any point in it.

Nooo, I should've left my roof rusty, now we'll never know how cool it could have been. Damned ricers...oh wait...I have a honda p.o.s. too.

Umm... WTF? Why would anyone do that? I don't really see the point to it on a modern car. The rat rod thing is about leaving it as was and just concentrating on driving it. Most of these cars were not field cars, or in a barn with the possible exception of the MK I Rabbit/Golf. Why ruin a perfectly good panel by making it useless within a year or two? Not to mention, that rust will run off and stain other parts of the car like headlights and the grille which will add to the replacement cost when it comes time to undo this. What was wrong with carbon fiber?

Another reason why it shows that they have no idea what they are doing.

I have never been a slave to fashion, so maybe I will never get the point of this. I have nothing but respect for import guys and gals who love modifying their cars to make them have higher limits, but I have never gotten the lifestyle crowd. It's like dummy blowers. Some people do that because they just want the look. I see it as impractical, expensive, and something that makes the car harder to use while not making it better in any tangible way.

FAIL.

I've got a rusty hood for an '81-'88 Cutlass 2-dr if anybody is interested!

It looks somewhat in place on that old VW Rabbit, but on a brand new VW? What a ****ing joke...

I went ahead and read up on it on VWVortex forums, and STILL left scratching my head as to why? Has every other possible kustom touch been tried on a car, and now all that is left is rust?

i call shinanagains, and inbreeding. maybe thos people live under powerlines or something. i dunno. what i have seen that i thought was cool was a car on the barrett jacksons auction. it was a "C" coupe cabin rat rod( the cabin was open and from the side it liked like a "C") that was painted with just a med. grey bedliner. i though that was kewl because it would never chip scratch or rust. proll not to good for aerodynamics but still kewl(cool) in my book. kinda like the flat black, no clear coat paint but different.
