I am a new member from Michigan. My name is James and to be quite Honest I am a Ford Man. I own a handfull Of Mustangs. My Oldest is a 67 Fastback and our newest is a 06 Shelby GT-H. I have always had a soft spot for G bodies. My First car was a dark green 1980 Monte with tan interior. This past Saturday I bit the bullet and bought a 80 Monte off of Craigslist. It is Solid but needs a ton of work. I am going to try my best to duplicate what I had back in High school with some modern updates. My vision for this car is of course dark green with it being lowered a few inches with 16 or 17 inch corvette rallys.Drivetrain is yet to be determined. The biggest hurdle will be finding a tan interior for this car. I put my first Monte together nerly 20 yeaars ago and I am sure I will have some questions for the seasoned vets. The good thing is the car I just bought is in better condition and is rock solid compared to my original and it is 20 years later.

Re: New memeber from Michigan

I'm still getting a lot of flak from my Chevy friends about buying an F350, but it had the solid front axle with manual hubs, a turbodiesel and manual transmission, and the biggest back seat of all the crewcabs (for all my wrench-trainees). Plus, it was for sale down the street.

This website has a gold mine of knowledge and contacts to help you find just right bit you need to fix your project. I'm glad you found a solid survivor. I too have done the same, trying to re-create my first car, that, at the time, was a total study in advanced oxidation. I finally parted it out when the bottoms-up Connecticut salt rot front met the tops-down Hawaii surf rot. I pulled the a-pillar trim and could see a crack of daylight around the windshield.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input and welcome messages guys. I am not a Anti GM Ford guy. I used to be a dyed in the Wool GM guy. I started off with the 80 Monte, went to a 89 2.8 Camaro Rs hardtop, graduated to a 91 Z-28 Convertible in 1996 (which I still own). I moved out of Michigan to Arizona and wanted another convertible and wound up buying a 91 5.0 convertible (which I still own) I figured when I returned to Michigan I would be able to sell it and make some money on a "Out west car". I beat the living dog crap out of that car and could'nt kill it. I was very impressed by the abuse it took without breakage. I know my camaros 7.5 rear would have puked it's guts out on the pavement if it would have been that car getting the abuse. I guess that 5.0 left quite an impression on me and it did'nt help it was in 2002 when GM Killed the Camaro. I was bitter about that decision. I look forward to putting this Monte together. Hopefully my budget is a little bigger than when I was in High school. I see the price of parts has went up tenfold. I bought new hedman headers for that car when i was 14 or 15 and paid less than $100 for them i see you cant touch a set for any less $200 for a gen1 SBC.

Welcome aboard. James.
