Ok so about a month ago i bought a 84 monte SS, i have a 700r4 out of a 86 vette i wanted to put in it, i dont know where to start as far as will it fit? What tailshaft should i use? I bought a 700r4 crossmember off jegs for the gbody. I heard the tailshafts on the vette 700r4 are shorter. Any help would be greatly appriceated. This would be my first complete swap. I have a gen I SBC thats going in it as well.

The Corvette transmissions had a shorter output shaft and special tailhousing. The problem you'll face is getting your driveshaft length just right to keep the yoke engaged with the splines and tailhousing bushing.

Due to the C4 Vettes having IRS, there was not the same fore and aft movement of the driveshaft yoke due to rear suspension travel. G-bodies work entirely different. I'd consider obtaining a standard 2WD transmission, preferably '88-later vintage. Those have more of the factory fixes & upgrades.

One of the ideal sources for the tail shaft housing would be either an B or RWD C body from the late '80's to early '90's. Hot Rod covered this back when the TH700R4's started to be an easy find. Those early ones would have the set up for gear drive speedo's. Believe they use the same speedo drive & driven gears. As for the length, not sure if the Vette TH700R4 tail shaft is the same length as the full size car TH700R4.

Thank you, i guess now i should just sell the vette 700r4 or just change the tailshaft. I talked to advanced driveline and the guy i spoke with said that it should work just need to customize the driveshaft. Im limited on funds, i still have to buy a driveshaft, the car literally came with nothing.

Could you give me a model and year i can get a tailshaft off of that would fit and bolt onto the car? I know the vette had a cbar and was specially made for it. I read somewhere a mid 90s caprice tailshaft would work. But i may have gotten confused cause the thread was also talking about the 200r4s.

Found an old Hot Rod with an article from May '88 on BBC going into an '85 SS. They used an TH700R4 from an 350 powered IROC cause the tail housing is the one needed. They also had to lower the stock mount on the cross member dropped 3/4" to have the transmission clear the tunnel. Look for an 3rd gen F Body, mid '80's & up B Body (Caprice, Custom Cruiser, Estate Wagon, RWD Caddy's.) The article mainly covers the BBC basic swap.

Thank you so much! Ill get the new tailshaft and have to rebuild the one i have. I looked up the numbers, the transmission was actually built in 87' for a vette. I got lied to, but i guess it was for the better.

Aside from the vette and 4wd trucks the 700r4's are all the same size and any extension housing and output shaft will work up to and including the 93 model year. Best output shafts to use would be from 91-93 but any would work. Some late 93 vehicles could have come with a 4l60e so make sure it's not one of those as the output shaft will not have the machined gear needed for mechanical speedo cable.

I had a Vette transmission in my 442 for a few years. I used the stock Vette tail housing and just bolted a plate to the bottom and set it on a crossmember that I built. One problem that I had was getting the linkage to work. If it was adjusted to go into park, it was very difficult to get into first. I have since put the 200r4 back in.
