Hi All,
I found the forum a couple of weeks ago and after reading for a while I realized this is a great place to share information and experiences on G-body cars. I used to have an 84 Elky that I started to build for some mild bracket racing and street use. The Elky had some issues with the body and with a little bit of luck I found a rust free 80 Cutlass Calais with straight body panels but a tired 307.
I took the whole drivetrain, front suspension and the rear end from the Elky and put it in the Olds. The first time out on the track the Olds went 0.4 seconds quicker than the Elky. Replacing the 307 with an aluminum headed SBC also shaved a lot of weight from the front end. With some suspension work the car is now running low 12's, The best et so far is 12.27 at 110. With a bracket setup on the slippery airfields that we have to run on it goes consistent 12.40's all day.
Here's what's in the car:
355 SBC, AFR 195 heads, mechanical cam, Air Gap intake
TH350 full manual, reverse pattern
Moser 12-bolt, Truetrack diff, 3.73 gears
Adjustable upper control arms, Edelbrock lower control arms
The nice thing about living in Finland is that only tailpipe emissions are tested yearly. You can have almost anything under the hood and you don't need to have the smog equipment in a car that old. Pre -78 models don't have emissions testing at all. For now I've decided to keep the car in the low 12's because I don't want a rollbar to spoil the stock looking interior. The bad thing about Finland is that converted to dollars and gallons gas costs about 8 dollars per gallon.
