Hi I've been around regals all my life because of my dad but I've never bother getting into them but I was given a 1982 regal which used to be his project for my 14th birthday, and if you have any tips on working on gbodys please tell me as I'm new to this.

Well you’ve got two years to get this thing running for your first car. Something I wish someone would’ve beat into me when I was 14 and got my el Camino is to really sit down and write down what you want the car to become in the next ten years. Of course as you grow and learn that vision will change but if you can keep a common goal and save for parts to get there you will be light years ahead.

I see it once had hydraulics on it, planning on keeping it that way?

Do you have a motor and trans?

WELCOME! You have a great project ahead of you. My advice would don't rush anything, pay as you go for what you need without running up dept. Post up your needs here, there are many great G body brother and sisters here that may have parts you need for a fraction of the price elsewhere such as eBay and market place. Also, Its always nice to have a complete list of what comes to mind for you, on to what you may need to complete your awesome project, this will help immensely. Good luck and keep all of us posted on your progress! 🙂

My best advice is to take your time. I bought my Cutlass last year two months before my 19th birthday and something I realized quickly and I'm passing on to you is not everything has to be bought because you can learn to build some things yourself like under hood supports or frame braces. Money will go quickly especially if you don't have a motor and you decide to go with anything but a Small Block Chevy. Though I'm building an Olds 350 for my Cutlass; the amount I have in parts right now, I'm still waiting on it to be machined and then long block assembled, is probably enough to build a healthy/strong SBC. But do what your heart desires and before spending any money take the time to realize what you want out of the car, if it's a drag car or a something for turns or even just a cruiser, in the end it will save you more money than you know. Also don't doubt the elders on the forum, some are abrasive but they mean well and everyone will be willing to help.

"But do what your heart desires and before spending any money take the time to realize what you want out of the car"

Now that is probably the best advice anyone could give. It's always easy to get caught up in others' opinions on to what to do with YOUR project, and make choices for you, but as suggested here by Metzger82, deciding FIRST what you want the car to be is truly key in all decisions going forward.

Hello, I would love to keep the hydraulics but I think I want to go with more of a "muscle car" I guess you could say,and I got a 358 small block motor and trans.

make a list of the items you HAVE
make a list of the items you NEED
make a list of the items you WANT
make a list of the alternatives to the NEEDs and WANTs

make a list of the work that has to be DONE
make a list of the work in the order that it HAS TO BE done

for example, would you paint the engine bay before or after you install the engine? (don't laugh, people have done that! it's much easier to do it before obviously)

don't get ahead of yourself, stick to the plan. don't think "oh, I'll get the seats re-upholstered now and then store them in the garage until it's time to install". guess how I know about that one 26 yrs later? and they're still not installed (life got in the way, but not for lack of trying). those seats are still in my garage, covered/sealed in plastic, but a close inspection will show that there has been some environmental wear as well as drying out of the vinyl (seats for a convertible so have to be weatherproof). (and I won't even get into the 283 SBC I rebuilt in 1994, installed and ran for an hour or so, then had to pull back out, and has been sitting on an engine stand since then for the last 27 years)

example
because I didn't want to pay a lot of money for an axle upgrade, 2 yrs ago I decided to buy a used 7.5" axle (98% of gbodies have this), found a 3.42 rear pumpkin (also on this site last year), and purchased a cast differential cover from Summit and new pinion gear crush sleeve set.
then lightning struck. I literally bought an 8.5" axle off this site 3 days ago. those are almost as rare as hen's teeth, and in good shape no less. yet, this appeared and I managed to snag it for a great price and it should require no work. ok, what am I gonna do with the other stuff (axle, ring/pinion gear, crush sleeve, etc) that I'm now into for about $300-450? who's going to want to buy this?

Make a plan and stick to it as you do your work. If a special deal comes up then snag it, but don't prepare ahead of time like I did and waste money.

Are you sticking with hydraulics? If you don't have all of the the pieces that can get expensive really quick. Regular spring suspension would be much cheaper to at least get you on the road
