Hi guys and gals! I am brand new here and thinking of (hopefully) becoming an active member when (if) I end up buying - what I think is? - an '87 442. Here's the CL ad......
http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/pml/cto/5368788510.html

So, as you can see, it's not what you'd expect a 'true' 442 to be - at least based on what I've read thru here and various internet ramblings. Seems it's not the right color, it has a half vinyl roof, and is a Supreme - not a Salon. Plus, from this thread, it seems even the vin isn't what it should be to be a 'true' 442.

But maybe Canada got offered a different (base model) version based on the brougham that wasn't as decked out as the 2 tones you see? It's a bench seat/no console car, and even the door panels are standard Cutlass? Was it possible that the guy just threw on 442 decals on a blue Cutlass and tweaked it a bit to give it some punch? I honestly don't know enough about g-body's to know if it's a 305..or 307? (301??) It has true duals, and aftermarket Edelbrock cam and carb and runs extremely well, as you'd expect a car with 60000 miles to do! It is mint, other than very minor fixes (chrome strip on lower rocker behind right front wheel is missing and the guages are really dim) The body is literally flawless and totally rust free! It was a garage queen car for the guy and I can't imagine a nicer '87 Cutlass...but is that all it is? A 3 dressed up as a 9....or 442?

Any advice you have is truly and muchly appreciated!

By the way - I had 2 true W30 (350) 442's and my very first car was a good ol' '70 Cutlass S. Love my Olds! =)

It has a newer SBC, and it looks like it just has some 442 decals stuck on. It would have originally come with a 307 Olds, among other already stated descrepancies.

Not a 442. Not sure I believe the mileage either. Parts are missing etc etc. Price is out of line, I'd skip this one unless you can get it way cheaper.

pris·tine
ˈprisˌtēn,priˈstēn/
adjective
adjective: pristine
in its original condition; unspoiled.
"pristine copies of an early magazine"
  • clean and fresh as if new; spotless
ya, just looking at the picture with the drivers side door open makes this description in the ad BS.

The guy that owned it - he was a parapalegic that passed on - had 3 Cutty's in his collection so they were driven liberally and I have no doubt that is the true mileage. The photo's really don't do the car justice (it's the man's parents, who are in their 70's that took pics/wrote the ad) I can sense scams as I've had over 60 cars and my intuition is solid. Other than wear on the carpets, the seats, door panels, headliner, dash, etc...are all as close to mint as I can imagine. And as I said, it fired right up, idled and drove flawlessly and was tight as a drum...as tight as a Cutlass Supreme can be ! haha Plus, the couples house was in an area widely considered to be in the upper end of the Vancouver area (not cheap!)

So, I think what it is - as mentioned - is a very nice Cutty with 442 stickers...because the guy liked 'em? Too bad. Other than the GN, the 442 is the nicest of the G-body's in my opinion. But yeah, unless I could scoop it for less, it's not worth it.

Anybody have a sweet black or silver up in Canada they're looking to sell? 😉

Hey,Welcome from West Michigan.
