I just finished getting my car running and when I went to back it off the hoist I had no reverse...not that it sliped but that it went park neutral drive and I went half way between park and neutral and stop nothing...its an 87 cutlass...does the linkage need to be changed...I got the car in pieces and am pretty sure it had a th200 in it

Is it a floor shift or column shift? If its a column shift, the shift linkage might be binding somewhere. Floor shift, it might be the shifter cable. Does the car have all the forward gears?

I have come accross this problem a couple of times.....and fixing the problem was as simple as tightening the trans bolts to the engine block.....there shouldn't be any space between block and trans....try that

It ended up being a couple things...the linkage was hitting the floor board and also the trans ended up being bad...so I pulled the trans and replaced it with another one I had laying around...and with a hammer I hit the floor up a little bit to clear the linkage...I think .it might have to do with the crossmember from g body parts and the energy suspention mount made the trans sit a little higher
