Hi everybody, noob here and I recently picked up an '83 Olds Cutlass Cruiser wagon. I've lurked on these and other forums for a couple years and waited for the right moment, I guess you could say. I've been a mechanic for 10+ years and have done lots of work on muscle cars, engine building, restorations, custom fabrication etc and plan to do most of the work myself at home in my garage.
I've owned a LOT of fox chassis Mustangs, and a slew of other cars but I've never owned a G-Body. Worked on plenty of other people's rides, and finally I'll be able to work on my own. She's been off the road for ten years, apparently 8 of those indoors. She looks pretty decent for her age, with little rust here and there. Currently sports a 231 V6 and brown interior with faux wood grain exterior. Classy! The price was right so I couldn't pass it up.

The plan is to throw in an L33 aluminum 5.3, single turbo, overdrive trans (still unsure between 4L60 and 700R4), Mustang disc 8.8 rear end with 3.27 gears and redrilled axles, Jimmy/Blazer front brake upgrade and some new lowering springs and balljoints/tie rods. I REALLY like the idea of somehow fitting the 88 Cutlass Supreme nose on my wagon. Kinda like this guys coupe:

Obviously I'd like to see if the nose works without swapping fenders and such as the wheel arches are different shapes. Or a Regal front nose isn't out of the question, I'm just not a big fan of the nose she's got.

Anyway, for the time being a friend has offered up a good running 4.8 for $250 and he will throw in an ecu, wiring and a bunch of other stuff real cheap. He may even have a spare 4L60 laying around. So I might just do the swap, get it on the road and accumulate the rest of the parts to do what I actually want in one shot down the road. It's either that or fix the brakes and brake lines and get the 3.8 running right and drive her through the winter like that. I figure I'll swap in the 8.8 rear end asap since the trac-lok will help with winter traction.
So, that's my plan of attack and here are a few more pics of the wagon!

Welcome to the site...wagon looks pretty decent yet!
Congrats on the wagon purchase. You beat me to it. I was hoping to buy it. The Cutlass coupe front end swap isn't all that easy. I don't think that the body lines between the coupe and sedan/wagon are the same. I think there might be a couple of photos here from folks who have tried. I hope the mechanical upgrades go well. Keep us updated with your progress.

Welcome aboard!
I did see the car on Kijiji. It definitely looked like a great score for the money. Sounds like you have some grand plans for it. I don't think you're going to be able to swap the Cutlass Euro style nose on to it without having to do some surgery. Why not just find an earlier single headlight header panel. I think it would look a lot cooler....just my opinion.
The 8.8 rear swap might also be a little involved...although it has been done. I'm sure one of our fellow members will elaborate more on the subject.

Keep us up to date on your progress.

This thing's been in storage since '92! The original owners son remarked that it what little it shows on the odo is original and hasn't turned over. Ran into a snag registering it as any car over 20 years old needs an appraisal. Stupid cash grabs. Should be here in an hour or so I'm hoping, will update when I have had time to play with her!!

welcome to a great site

OH yes the appraisal , i had forgotten about that gem . For those of you not in Ontario , to transfer a used vehicle to your name you must purchase a Used Vehicle Information Package for $25.00 it shows the VIN , previous owners , if it's been Branded ( write off rebuilt ) and of course a value for sales tax purpose's.........if it's higher than your bill of sale ,you pay based on the higher number..If the vehicle is over 20 years old ..it shows no value and now you must pay for an appraisal.

your choices are the real appraiser's that you would use for insurance purpose's on your mint 69 GTO ( a little pricey ) or the snake oil used car lots ,the type that their office is a trailer.....been in business 6 weeks .

The one and only time I have to deal with this ( 10ish years ago ) for my Regal , It was $50.00 CASH no tax stuffed into a man's pocket for a slip of paper stating that my $100 car was appraised at $450.00 upping my tax bill .

At the time no legit new car dealer wanted anything to do with it

SORRY , just had to share that experience.

Enjoy your new ride

Dave

I could understand trying to find out the past history of the vehicle, previous owners, etc... but the local municipality seems to hold you for ransom with a charge for every little thing.
The appraisal law sounds ridiculous. :wtf:Just another reason to reach into your pocket.😕

Yeah, you guys get it lol!!!
It was a huge surprise for me because this was not the case when I left Ontario for Quebec in late '06.... I moved back last year. The girl at the 'Service Ontario' counter told me it's been this way for at least 15 years. Right. I must be crazy then. The appraisal BS is nothing but a cash grab.

But, on a more positive note the more I look at it and the little I've tinkered with it.... I'm starting to think that what the previous owners son told me about the reading on the odometer being the actual mileage may hold water. It's showing 14,237km. The car is far from perfect with faded paint, carb needs an accelerator pump, headliner sags, needs brake lines. But, none of the buttons or markings are worn out. Seats and carpet aren't worn out. And the only real rusty part is the bottom of the drivers front and rear doors, maybe from a moist area while in storage. Most of the chrome seems to be in good shape.

So on Sunday, I'm going to have a bonanza of detailing and go to town cleaning this whole thing out and polishing the turd. Maybe I'll even fit in some time to fix the brake lines and bleed the brakes to see if anything else needs replacing. I'd like to find a set of decent wheels to put on it for now, maybe some IROC's or some 15" rally wheels. Anybody know what the widest tire I can stuff under a wagon might be??
Thanks everyone, the site is definitely helping me get the right info so I can get this project of mine going!!
