I was smelling gasoline and noticed a puddle under my Bonnewagon. Yup, fuel pump was dripping. I knew I had some new ones and found four that only had the two lines- in and out. I needed the third line for re-circulation. I kept digging and I finally found one that had the third line. It was an NOS Airtex Pontiac V-8 1970-71 that I had bought at Englishtown swap meet probably back in the late 80's. It looked perfect and I installed it. It seems to work OK but I am concerned about the age. Do they fail from age or use? The dripping pump was probably 20 years old. This NOS one is probably 30 years old or more.

It will last until it fails. The alcohol used in the gas blends will likely take a toll on it eventually. But since it's already on, worst it can do is leak first, right? I've seen the 60s-70s crowds clamor over NOS fuel pumps and they seemingly use them without much issue.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But go out and buy a new one if this one conks out early. Of course, it's your peace of mind that matters, so do what makes you feel at ease about it. That's my advice.

That’s what the tell tale does. Let’s you know that you got a diaphragm problem. Unless it’s catastrophic failure I don’t think you’re going to wash out bearings. But it doesn’t matter why a diaphragm leaks on a mechanical pump. You can’t ignore it.
