Greasemonkey
i told my machinest i wanted to build my rocket up to 400hp with the intention to use nos, we balanced the crank, reconditioned the rods w arp bolts, used forged flat top pistons.30 over, and sis a valve job and porting on my heads, would this be a good foundation for nos, if so what set up could i buy and what hp jet can i use, i have a eld elct choke 750, and an edl 7111 intake port matched, any info would help as i may be asking for a kit for x mas from the wife!!

What size Olds do you have?

Did you go ahead and add ARP main bolts or studs?

I would look for an adjustable plate system from Edelbrock or NX. Start at 100 HP level and go up as you feel comfortable. Don't forget about the need for a better convertor to handle the NOS. Stay away from rev-limiters while the nitrous is on, it will break stuff!

Okay,

Lets get started, for Christmas:

NOS Nitrous Oxide Systems 'Powershot' is a non-adustable 125 HP is $395.95 at Summit

NOS 'Sniper' is the adjustable version of the 'Powershot' 100-125-150 HP $399.99 at Summit $379 at Jeg's

NX Nitrous Express 'Main Line' is adjustable 100, 150, 200, 250 HP is $369.99 at Summit

The Edelbrock systems were quite a bit more at $490 for the Perfomer for 50-75-100 HP with the RPM for $535 with 100- 125-150-200 and 250

The main difference between a system that will go to 250 and one that tops out at 125 is the size of the solenoids and number of holes in the plates.

If 125 is all you want to add, and do not want to tune it or to be able to go bigger then get a non-adjustable 'Powershot'...if you ever want to go bigger or want to put it on another motor, say, if you got a 403 or 455...then add the $70 extra for the MainLine. I would shop locally, so you can find out where you can get your bottle refilled.

If you don't mind used, look at craigslist, I have seen and bought tons of systems for $150-250...most people don't use them a whole lot, maybe a bottle or two...just saying.

Does that help, or hurt?

To put it into perspective, I just re-built a mid-70's 350 Buick for my beater Regal project. Cast dish pistons. Pocket ported the heads, good 3-angle valve job. Small cam(GS-110). Aluminum intake similar to a Performer. Stock manifolds with true 2-1/2" duals. HEI, good wires, a step colder plugs, and as soon as its broke-in I am starting with 100 shot and going to ease up to 150 if the stock mechanical fuel pump will carry it (maintain 5 psi fuel pressure to feed the nitrous system).

Did you file the gap open on the piston rings? The nos will cause the piston ring to expand and if not properly gap they could fuse together. Also on a stock connecting rod motor i would limit yourself to a 150 shot max.

i dont think i did, dammit
Well if you didnt you can probably get away with 100-125 shot. Seeing how some people are known to spray a stock motor which rings wouldnt be touched with no problems. Some even do 150 but me personally wouldnt feel safe doing that just to risky for me.
