Hello All
More info needed as usual!!! Being picky and want everything on this car to work. Latest 2 small issues. Trip odometer does not work nor be able to set to zero. Seems froze up
Next want to set the clock. Clock is working but when you pull the stem out to reset the entire thing comes out. You have a 3" long stem (cable) in you hand. Probably need to pull the instrument cluster but then what??
Thanks to all in advance for the help

Generally speaking, it always helps to provide info on the car the stuff is in, if it's an 84 Olds rallye pack, or grandma speedo, or where the clock is...not trying to be an a-hole, but usually end up being one anyway, however it helps people that may have had the same kind of car/equipment problem and they have a fix for that particular issue. You may have depicted your car in your new guy thread, but not everyone recalls which car(s) you have.

Otherwise you'll get nebulous answers like "take the speedo to a speedo repair shop". Which isn't very helpful in and of itself.

Hello
My bad. This is a 1985 Monte Carlo SS. The clock is actually or at least appears to be part of the tach face. The trip odometer is located of coarse in the speedo with the set knob protruding thru the outer clear plastic lens. Clock set is the same but you can pull it completely out. thank you

Can you easily wiggle the trip odometer stem? Those things have a screw on knob with the screw insert for the knob I believe. Most of the time the "stem tube" breaks right at the base and flops around, so the plastic teeth don't engage properly. OR, the teeth are screwed on on one or the other or both. There also is a chance the trip odometer number roller could be whacked. It's so hard to tell without having it right there.

I remember those Tach Clocks in the Monte SS. I think 85 was the last year of that. I think. Didn't they move the clock to the radio in 86? Anyway, if the stem is coming out, something is loose. I'm not a gage repair guy, but you can't know what's wrong until you get behind it and look. You're going to need to pop the lens cover off the gages and two small bolts hold the tach in. You'll likely need to remove the knobs on the clock and trip odometer reset before removing the lens and dash surround. Not a quick job to do, but while you're in there, maybe upgrade the backlighting bulbs to something a bit brighter? Keep in mind the stems are extra prone for breakage when they're out of the guage panel since there's no "protection" for the stems. So be careful.

That's all the free advice I can give you at the moment.

Hello
The trip numbers seem to be locked up/frozen. The odometer rotates as you drive but no movement at all with the trip. Going to have to pull the cluster I guess to look further. The clock is working but needs reset. When you pull the knob out to turn it and change the time the entire thing can come out with the knob and the cable it attaches to. Once again I guess it means complete disassembly. A lot of work for these 2 small isuues but everything should work .
thank you

OK all. My 1985 monte carlo ss. What is the process to get acces to the speedometer and the tach/clock ? Do not want to screw this up!!

Personally, it's ALMOST useless, but there's not much out there on this:

Another piss poor one

This is the best one I've seen yet on showing HOW to get to the gages....

Hello
Helps.. I figured I would just take my time and get it apart. Not sure I will be able to do anything with the clock adj stem pulling out and not engaging but hope I get the trip working. What do you think about the dakota cluster? They definitely seem proud of them price wise!!
Thank you
