I Have a 78 Camino...speedometer works fine till I reach 50-55 then it'll start bouncing. Doesn't bother me but what does is that my odometer doesn't work at all. Stuck on 80,*** miles since I got the cruck 6+ months ago and no telling how long before that? Can anyone help?

We fixed that problem by putting graphite into the speedometer cable and speedometer itself. In the back where the cable insets in the unit. It helped for a while, but after a few thousand it went back bouncing. If you are really fed up with, I would think a new speedometer itself would fix the problem.

The little parts in the speedo are wearing out. I good speedo shop can rebuild it for you. I had an old 80 something caviler, that the speedo would just spin in complete circles. The guy I had look at it, said some spring in there broke causing it. He also told me when it gets weak, it will cause it to bounce. A very common problem with older cable driven speedos.

Ditto on the replies above. Lube helps for awhile, but in the end, it was just prolonging the inevitable death of the cable or the speedo itself. In my experience when the speedo started jumping, it was usually just a dry cable and the odometer continued to work. It was just annoying as hell watching the speedo bounce to 80 or 90, drop off, do it again, and I knew it wasn't because I was breaking the tires loose and causing it. LOL It also was noisey. Screeching sound from that cable like fingernails on a chalkboard.
