i just put a used small block 350 my 78' malibu not realizing that the oil pan was slightly dented. Now causing banging on the bottom end. Does anyone know if you can pull the pan off with the motor in the car, obviousley raised up, but enough clearance to pull it out an bang out the dents. thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can't get it out that way because the back end of the pan needs to clear the bottom of the transmisson housing and you just can't get enough height to tilt the pan back that far because the transmission housing jams up against the floor/firewall when you lift it all.

Holy run on sentence there!

Yes, u can. Undo motor mount bolts, drop the starter and exhaust, remove the flywheel dust cover then lift the engine using an engine lift. A couple bolts on the pan are a PITA because the trans cooler lines r in the way, but its not a problem. Take all the bolts out first that way u dont hurt yourself IF the engine were to fall. U can put the motor mount bolts back in after lifting it to keep it up as well. When the trans hits the trans hump, go just a little bit higher and u will get the pan out. It barely fits and will scrape on the flywheel just a little. My 7qt. Milodon pan went back in the same way. I never removed a radiator hose or fuel line either.

Just DO NOT put your hands between engine and engine crossmember, the risk isn't worth it.
