My dad has a 455 olds, a turbo 400 trans, and a 3.90 12 bolt rear. Its all in a 68 442 which isnt a G body of course but some of you guys gotta have a 455 lol. He is trying to find a new transmission because its purpose is a cruiser/hot rod but he buzzes 3000 prm at 60mph. He wants to know what trans would hold up well behind a 455 .030 over, edelbrock alum heads . . . . 550 HP with around the same torque. He wants low end but still be able to drive it without it screaming rape. I know any trans will have to be built up to handle it but are there any trans that would be better for this? He loves the 6 speed in his 96 Z28 but doesnt think something like that will hold up. Maybe 4L60e????? Any input is appreciated.

It'd be a lot cheaper and easier to ditch the 3.90 gears for something more street friendly like 3.08...
Oldsmobiles have so much low-end torque that they really don't need such a steep gear on the street.

Overdrive transmissions built to handle that kind of power cost a lot of money, which is why my car has a TH400.

If money isn't an issue, I would just put a Gear Vendors overdrive behind the TH400 and call it done.

Yea he was thinkin about gear vendors but there too exprensive for now. He said he would swap to a 3:55 if he could find one that would handle it. Its not urgent right now because the car is put up for winter.

A TH-2004R would bolt right up and if built properly, would have no problem handling the power. Properly built you'd be looking at someting in the $2000-$2500 range.

And T-56's can put up with more than what they are rated for. 😉

A stage II 200r4 would do it. Check with ck performance

Ok thanks guys!

Dave Huseck built me a nice 2004R for $1000, his website is www.turbobuickperformance.com
A 2004R will hold up no problem with a 455 just so long as your not drag racing, there's no need to be spending a couple of grand on one and you can keep your low gears too...
