Does anybody know what the original EPA mileage figures are for their vehicles? I'm curious as the post-'85 cars are listed on the EPA website, however older cars are not listed. Closest thing I could find to mine was a 1981 Pontiac GP with a 265, which was rated at 19/27 but I couldn't find the combined or average mileage figure. Anybody have any insight on this?
229 V6 auto 19/26 mpg
267 V8 auto 17/24 mpg
305 V8 auto 17/25 mpg (that's Camaro, not A body)
1980 was the last year for non-computer controls, so 1981 you saw maybe 1-2 mpg increase on highway mileage. I know the 229 went up to 28 mpg hwy.
But also remember, those highway figures are from the 55 mph speed limit era. Best I've seen with my Malibu 229 on a long trip (avg 75 mph) was 24 mpg. Of course at those speeds, aerodynamics becomes a significant factor.
i remember back when the 78 was bone stock, my family was getting around 19 city and around 25-27 highway doing 75-80 mph.
when new it came with those terriable 2.29 rear gears. the thing had one hell of a top speed though!!!
i got caught in highschool doing 165mph on the highway
