So I bought an 1980 Cutlass supreme a few weeks ago and what I found when looking for the build sticker is on that year it was placed on the spare tire cover which is no longer with the car. .. I went to a gm dealer hoping to gain info using my VIN but they were unable to help.... how does one go about finding this info? I primarily need the color code... The car is orange which is the original color but the info I did find online about color options that year us they didn't offer orange as a color...

The paint info is actually on the stamped tag that is riveted to the cowl under the hood on the driver side.

Here is the 1980 brochure page showing available colors:

Weird. Does that car have a clean title? Does the VIN tag appear tampered?

It's not often that both of those items go missing, especially the body tag. Another option for you may be GM Heritage Center where you can obtain a copy of your original invoice.

Try looking in the car for a build sheet. Usual locations are under the rear seat ,behind the drivers side door panel , under the headliner and on top of the gas tank. Ive seen cars with one in every location and cars with none so its a crapshoot especialy if any of the interior has ever been apart then they usually got tossed. on a car this old who knows but its worth a shot.

It's a 1980 and you say the original color is orange. Looking at paintref.com, the closest thing to orange is "Cinnabar" which is paintcode WA7104

Due to screen calibration differences the sample on the websites may not appear to look the same as the car, you can probably find a place near you -- or online, such as paintscratch.com -- to mix-up a small sample so you can do some color comparisons. Bonus is if you go to a brick-and-mortar store they will have a bunch of color books, maybe you'll get lucky and they have a book that goes back that far.

VIN tag is still there and as far as I know the title is clean....

I'll look in the places for the build sheet as suggested...

Thanks for the info fellas!!
