Ok I may get laughed at for this question but I need some help with the PCV system on my 231 3.8L v6 1984 cutlass supreme.

Number one and most important is the pcv valve grommet has fallen into the hole when i was trying to remove it. How bad is that? Probably pretty bad i assume. Do i need to take of the intake manifold and get it out?

Number two is the placement of the components. I mistakenly put the pcv valve in the wrong spot. I have 2 holes and i finally found the old pcv valve ( i thought it was just missing ). One hole on the outside edge of the engine on the passengers side and one right behind the carburetor on the passenger side. Which one does the pcv valve go into? I believe it goes on the one closest to carburetor right? If so then the other hole is for the breather???? Out of the breather hole the only thing that should be there is a grommet with the elbow in it and a hose leading to the breather element that goes into the air cleaner assembly right? Am i correct or way off?

Thank you in advance for all your help!

Good part is the intake manifold gasket on the 231 is a metal valley pan that goes across the lifter valley, so the old PCV valve grommet is probably just sitting on top of it, and will likely stay there till the end of time.

The PCV grommet is available in the HELP section at Autozone, or at least it was. It will fit in the hole on the far outside of the intake manifold, and a hose goes from it to the carb. The other large hole at the back of the intake manifold should be threaded, and a connector goes in to it for the power brake booster.

The exactly the same thing happened to me. And I finally found the old PCV valve in it's spot at the back of the engine. The plastic elbow that is connected to the breather goes into the valve cover. I am glad I'm not the only one that was confused by this. lol.

..

Thank you both for the quick response. Yea I put the new pcv valve i bought into the breather elbow thinking the old pcv valve was just missing lol. So i guess i will just leave the grommet in their for now and if it messes something up then it might be a good excuse for an engine rebuild lol. Thanks again to both of you!
