If I get the other buick it has a pontiac 301 in it, an I am contemplating building that motor and using it as a pure track car, but is that motor even worth re-building and putting any money into?

I dont know much about Pontiac engines, but wasnt the 301 known as what the 307 Olds is known for? They were designed for economy and emissions and did not make that much power. If they are like 307s than it would take a lot of money for not that much horsepower. The more logical approach would be to get a Pontiac 350 or 455.

ehh.. i was hoping you wouldnt say that lol...
well if nothing else i know where to find a few more sbc's...

They are good for a mild driver only.

Any other Pontiac is a better choice for performance.

I got a couple of Pontiac cores, how fast youwant to go?

The main problem is the heads, restrictive. The blocks are questionable for strength too. The 301 is light, has the same bore/stroke as the ford 302. If you could get real Pontiac heads to work with a narrowed aftermarket intake, it could produce power.

The heads are a sore spot but the intake is a killer.

The blocks are acually fine, the cranks are weak.

With a mild rebuild and a few select parts, expect maybe 250 hp and will last if you are nice to it.

I stuffed a low mileage one in a T1000 (chevette) and went high 13z.

every part on all pontiac v8's are interchangeable except the 301 so i would go with a different engine

Find ya a 455 Wildcat... My dad had a 70-something Nova with a mildly built motor and trans, And his friend brought his moms 4 door(can't remember what car) and it blew his doors off, And it was a stock motor! Ofcourse, This was back in the late 70's though. I would like to find a good one with low miles, But they are hard to find.. Atleast around here.

The block on the 301 is not strong enough for heavy duty use. I have personally broken a 301 block after running a 350 Pontiac crank in it!!

Really, the best feature of the 301 is that you can instantly drop in any real Pontiac V8, from 1955-1980, from 287 c.i.d. to 455 with relative ease. If you use a 69-80 350/400/428/455 you can use all of the same accessories and motor mounts as well. The pre-69 engines require a small adapter plate to let you run the later motor mounts but you can make it cheaply if you have the inclination and they are not too expensive to buy either.

Please don't go sbc like everyone else! But if you do, put your Pontiac motor mounts and frame brackets up for sale so that I can convert another car to Pontiac power!

Good luck, however you get there!
