My 85 Cutlass Supreme Brougham is suffering from the same issue every other G body with power seats seems to have: the seat transmission has crumbled. Unfortunately, all of the other GM vehicles I looked at of this age in the junkyard seem to have suffered the same fate. It seems though, that some of the ones built after 1985 had a different seat track, transmission and motor assembly. I noticed this on B bodies and Century FWD models. My question is: Did GM change the design on the G bodies at this time and will the whole track assembly bolt up in an earlier car? I think it should, but am unsure if the wiring is the same or if GM even changed the design at all ( I couldn't find an 86-88 G body last time I went).

My 78 motor is still going strong.

It's quite possible that something has gotta stuck down under there, interrupting the travel of the seat.

All I can add is GM changed the motor/transmission design somewhere around 82, probably across all Divisions.

The thing is, it's the actual housing that has gone bad. I pulled the seats a few years ago when I was welding patches into the roof for rust repair and it worked fine then, but when I went to reinstall the seat, the trans was cracked and falling apart due to deterioration of the plastic. I saw a reproduction available somewhere online that was made of a better material, but they wanted an absurd amount of money ($400-500!). From that I am guessing this is a common problem. I will look at some of the earlier cars now since you said that. Maybe they have a system more resistant to time than the later ones did.

My '79 Malibu had a power seat track, which I still have. It has worked quite well over the years, but I need a new switch for it. I've used it in several different vehicles. Its held up pretty well.
