Ever have one of those "WTF?" moments- when you do or miss a detail so utterly obvious it make you question your own sanity? That was me last night. So, I decide to do a power steering delete- this is after having the pump start to leak, and not planning to retain it in the near future anyhow. So after I remove the pump, lines, bosses into the gear box.... It hits me- What is going to drive the water pump/fan and alternator since that was the only remaining belt to do so?
I never cursed at myself so much. To miss such an obvious thing. I have worked with cars for six years now. I was a lead mechanic at a dealership for two. And the most obvious of observations I missed. I seem to forget that the alternator belt system on this engine excludes the crank pully. Whats worst, I just changed the belts two days ago. I KNEW this. SOAFB!

Anyhow... I had to reinstall the pump so I could run the alternator and fan. So as a solution, I have a couple of ideas. First is that I need to move the alternator back closer to the engine by half and inch- to run a belt from the alternator to center pully to crank- using the crank and center pullys that previously ran the p/s belt. This would require some bracket fabbing or borrowing. I have a 350 olds sitting around, I wonder if I can make those left bank brackets work on the 307?

Second idea still requires moving the alternator back- again because there is no crank pully grove that is in the same plain as the alternator. But in this idea, I would mount the alternator on the right bank (passenger) I think non a/c g bodys did this.

So- any ideas, input, or anyone else feel like a dull hammer sometimes? 🙂

ps- 86 regal 307 olds.

not sure about the old but in my el camino im running a 327 out of an older elco and the heads dont have any holes for brackets so went down to the local speed shop and i ran the alt on the driverside using two brackets that bolt on to the header flange and just ran one belt crank waterpump and alt together...

they also sell them online its two pieces one bolts up too the header the other one bolts up to the first one and adjusts so u can line up the alt with the other pullies..

You need the non air alt. mounting setup. Mounts the alt. on the pass. side of the motor. One belt runs from the crank, w.p., and alt. You'll also need the pulleys and a non air water pump.
