My 85 Salon was purchased as a half way completed restoration atempt. It needs some primer on it or something so it wont start seriously rusting. Is there any product or anything anyone suggests to prime the thing? I wasn't going to take the time and do any body work untill I get a little more time. Any tips/suggestions to pretty much just get something on the car to get it ready to paint latter this summer?

If it's going to be stored inside, I'd just throw a quick coat of self-etching primer on it and let it sit.

If it's going to be stored outside, I'd throw a quick coat or two of epoxy-primer on it to protect the sheet metal.

Well Its sitting outside right now as the garage is packed full of parts from 3 cars but it could really go inside if I wanted it to.

Any different prep needed for the two besides a rust free clean surface? Self etching doenst need to be hit with a DA but epoxy does right?

I do need to go back and fix the 2 inch rust hole in the drivers side lower quarter and weld the new rockers on later this summer or spring.

It would be a good idea to buzz the car down quick with the D.A. sander before priming it with either product.

The self-etching primer would probably be best if it's just going to sit around, but only if it's indoors.

The thing is, that no matter what you cover it with, you'll end up removing most of it to do your repairs.

When we would blast cars down to bare metal at the shop, we'd throw a quick coat of self etching primer on them just so they didn't rust up with the humidity.
Areas we were gonna cut out we didn't even prime, and then once we were ready to start the body work, we ended up sanding most of the self etching primer off before we even started.

Epoxy primer is also more expensive. I'd only use it if it were to be sitting long term, like more than a year.

Cool, theres my answer. Just rub the thing down with some paint thinner to get some of the rust off, hit it with the DA and shoot it with some self etching primer. Thanks!

Once the thing gets primed it will proabably get the engine and trans installed just so it moves and then Ill shoot it with paint once the body work gets done.

I like to use something like PickleX or Dupont metal conditioner on bare metal before painting. It will kill any flash rust and etch the metal. It will be ready for expoxy paint after that. There are more details but I could spend way too much time going over all the options. Checkout the autobodystore.com forums. They will steer you in the right direction and there is plenty of info of what to do in all different situations. A paint job is only as good as the base coats so you want to start perfect. But, If you just want some temporary paint, just spray something from a spray can. That will last until you can sand it off and start over. It will keep the rust down for awhile.

I like the idea of epoxy paint but I wouldn't do it unless I prepped everything right. I wouldn't do it as a temporary fix. Epoxy paint is hard to sand off later.
