all depends on what your goal, so...

what is your goal with a motor?
I really don't have a goal. I was talkin to my girl about it and she asked me what's the Pro's & Con's. So i thought i was a really good question and just need some opinions on the motors

If you plan on driving a lot or long distance go with the LS and keep it fuel injected. I'll be dropping one in my el soon! The only con I see is the cost of the swap, but in the long run it will pay off. I love my classic sbc carb'ed engines but I also like to drive. That fuel injected Ls engine is very dependable!

But can't you inject sbc

you can put EFI any motor you want to. The LS parts are readily available used if you want stock stuff and if you go ls1 ls2 ls6 ls3 they are aluminum blocks with 6 bolt mains and good flowing stock heads the ls3 makes 425hp from the factory. If you wanna race hard and drive it daily go LS.

If you want a relatively bolt in swap go with 5.7 vortec. not crazy HP but reliable as anything else out there many have 200k on them and still going. LT1 would bolt in just fine too.

gen 1 sbc with a carb is... well, i'll be kind

ls

Gen1 engine:
low cost
easy to build/swap
look sexy
You can build/repair entire drivetrain with $30 worth of tools

Gen III engine:
Great HP and mileage
People wanna look at your motor
Expensive to build
Expensive to swap
Lots of work involved
More tools required

That said, I'm goin Gen III w/carb

I'm building a Gen. 1 350 010 block right now. If this is your first, like it is mine, then go SBC. I'm looking at about $3000 for the build including a rebuilt 700r4. You're gonna spend way more than that on the LS alone. So go SBC and get your learn on before you jump into that LS money pit...although I'm planning on building a LS for my next project. My SBC will make over 400HP easy when I'm done and could easily get 500 with throwing a little more money at it. but the brothers were right about having a depending motor that you can drive long distances...if that's the plan then the LS is a good idea, although you can ride out dependably on a well-built Gen. 1. Just take your time with it...

can you pull and install motor yourself etc. (can you do all the labor yourself)

I disagree with some that say the ls is more expensive etc. the thing about the ls is that you can leave it stock and get more hp and reliability out of it that a sbc or bbc... add a cam and it takes off, swap heads to other stock heads etc, and you get even more, without going inside the motor...

take for instance a lq4, add l92 heads, ls6 cam (or better), springs, ported tb, leave stock truck intake, and you will be surprised at the results, esp with a good tune...
