I want a transmission from a car in a junkyard. The junkyard does not allow any jacks, since the cars are already lifted on old rims. My question is, how can I safely remove it without killing myself? I asked them what people usually do, and they said there not sure but it takes atleast two people.

I really dont know what they expect people to do. Should I just try and jam a bunch of stuff under there to hold it up, maybe find some old car jacks in the trunks of the cars?

Please, if anyone has done this I need some pointers!! Thanks.

how strong you feel?

two people can do it by hand easily. I know a few guys that can do it by themselves.

Ok, I guess ill give it a try with two people. Im not the strongest person, and only weigh 160 pounds. In that position I dont think it would work to well with just me.

I have a method that may work. I put a tire below the trans, and then loosen all of the bolts with me underneath it. It won't fall since it had the dowel pins holding it in place. Then, you get out from under it and just pry it off the dowels and let it fall. Easy. My other method is to straddle it and basically bench press it down on top of me,using my knees as a jack, then move it aside. My junkyard has all of it's cars on stands which makes these methods possible. It's really not that heavy, maybe 150lbs. The third method is to use a chain fall hoist and pull the engine and trans together, then disconnect the two. You can do this quickly if you bring a large pair of shears and just cut all of the wires and hoses then disconnect the mounts and pull it. You don't have to pull the driveshaft this way, as it will slip out of the tailshaft as it comes out.

:NOTE: If any of these ideas injure or kill you, I do not take responsibility!!!
