the trans crossmember will not bolt up. it seems as the 400 is abou 3 to 4 in longer...has anybody put one in and if so what crossmember did hyou use.

Iceman is what I used. You will also need a driverside frame extension. I fabbed my own but Iceman sells them also.

You can try and contact direct here : http://www.maliburacing.com/iceman or on EPay.

If you don't want to buy one you can use a stock crossmember from a G-body with a TH-2004R.

Basically, the TH-400 bolts up in the same location as a stock TH-2004R. As said though, in your '78, you'll need the frame extension to move the crossmember back on the drivers side.

If you have the money though, Iceman is the way to go. I have one of his crossmembers for my T-56 and its been great.

Summit also sells the crossmember and extensions. I have a used iceman crossmember that will work if you end up needing one.

You're gonna need to shorten your driveshaft too...

Good catch. Forgot about that.

Or nab one from a car with a TH-200-4R

Depends on what tailhousing length is on that TH400. If it has a short tailhousing, you can use the 200-4R driveshaft. If it's one of the longer tailhousings you'll need a custom driveshaft. In any case, the front yoke needs to be changed since the TH400 uses a larger one.

With the short tail, you'll still need to shorten the driveshaft. The 200-4R & TH400 use the same crossmember, but the case for the TH400 is about 1/2" longer.
I had mine crammed in there without shortening it, but it was bottomed out and had no travel to accomodate suspension movement.
I ended up having 3/4" taken out of the driveshaft, even though I only asked them to take out 1/2"...
