I'm about to finally build a decent sound system in my cutlass and I'm looking for advice from more experienced sound people. I am about to purchase the Q-logic kick panels with 6.5in and 2in tweeter mounts. I've been looking on Amazon, but there are about a 1,000 6.5in tweeter combos and they all have about the same ratings. I've never upgraded a sound system before, so I had a few questions.

1) Do I have to do anything cross-over wise between the tweeter and speaker/ head unit?
2) What is a good price to pay for a quality pair of speakers?
3) Which brand do you recommend? I know Infinity and Alpine were popular 10 years ago.
4) I'll eventually put 6x9s in the back, should I buy them together or can they wait? Right now I am running the shitty 3.5in speakers in the dash and that is it. The wind is louder right now than my stereo.

Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Ihave installed the q-logic panels in my Malibu wagon . I am actually not to fond of them. they will do not come predrilled for speakers or tweeters. you will need to do your ouwn holes. if you run a 6un a 6.5 speaker you may not be able to use your speaker covers. they do require some trimming to fit and a lot of patience.
my speakers came with plastic grills so I was able to heavily trim them to fit. if your grills have the plastic surround with metal mesh you may not be able to use them.
if you have a 2dooor I would suggest the door panel kit that allows you mount the speakers there.
look nicer, speaker wont interfere with e brake, and if your car is stick shift forget about the q-logics

for speaker suggestions that will all depend on your budget and what you want from the system. I have powerbass 2xl 6.5's in front with powerbass 2xl 6x9's in the rear .I am super happy with them . I have done a lot of stereo installs over the years.
if you go with components they will include a external crossover. just hook up wires to the correctly marked teminals and your done. coaxials have everything in on package just hookup the speaker wires and go.

also to get the best sound quality and usefulness from the speakers you do choose you will need a 4channel amp to run the front and rear speakers.

I have a set in my car..

What head-unit are you using (model number)? Will you be amping the speakers?

1) Do I have to do anything cross-over wise between the tweeter and speaker/ head unit?
If you buy a set of components, they will come with a crossover. If you're not going to amp the speakers, I'd suggest going with components (the midbass driver and the tweeter are one unit).

2) What is a good price to pay for a quality pair of speakers? Quality is subjective. "Good price" is subjective. The only thing that matters is your budget. Do not be fooled by expensive audio equipment, in reality, even if a driver is "better", if you can't hear the difference, it's irrelevant.

3) Which brand do you recommend? I'll only recommend what I've personally used, which are the following brands: Alpine Type R, Infinity, Polk Audio, and JL Audio.

4) I'll eventually put 6x9s in the back, should I buy them together or can they wait? 6x9's are not necessary according to most "car audio gurus", but I personally like them. You could certainly get away with running a set of 6.5 components up front without rear fill, but that's only if you amplify the wattage they receive. If you're just running them from an aftermarket head-unit, at most, they'll be getting 20-40 watts RMS each. That's...nothing, especially if you're in any type of car with a loud exhaust.

Thanks a lot for the information. How much of a pain was bending the parking brake to fit the kick panel? It looks close in the picture. When you say 6x9s aren't necessary, what do you mean exactly? They are overkill or not needed in the back?

It wasn't a pain at all. I'm not really a strong dude and I just pulled it a few inches with minimal effort. Worst case, before you put the kickpanel there, take something and pry it out a little bit.

From what I understand, music is supposed to come from the front. Think about a concert, tv, etc.. the sound is generally coming from in front of you. If your front stage is loud enough, you don't need the 6x9's, unless you're trying to send lower frequencies to them. Like I said, I've always had rear speakers...and since my front kickpanels don't give me any midbass at all, the 6x9's are a must.

Amplified or not, upgraded 6x9s are a huge improvement in a G body. And they make 6x9 woofers that can give you a little extra for bass if you decide on running an amp.
You dont need to buy/install evrything at once, but youll wish you did once you start.

I went ahead and got the Q-logics and a set of Alpine 6.5s with tweeters. I'll run them for a while and save up for an amp and rears. Anything has got to be better than the 3.5s in the dash right now that blow out with any amount of volume put on them. Thanks for all the info from everyone, I'll update when I have them installed.
