I like 40s and magnaflows. but I was wandering if there are mufflers that get good flow, but pretty quiet at the same time. i heard turbo mufflers are restrictive.
i kind of like these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp9Rj6uzFXg
like i said i like the sound of the go to mufflers but just looking.
When customers wanted the best performance muffler without excessive noise, drone or vibration, I always recommended the Dynomax welded ultra-flow or the Goerlich Xlerator. Both are available in staonless steel.
Use the longest body you can fit; it will make it as quiet as possible, but still flow almost 100% of straight pipe flow rates.
I'm sure there are other products now that are comparable; you just need to find a straight-through muffler with densely packed case. The best units have a ceramic wool wrap around the perforated tube and a 0main body cavity that is densely packed with stainless steel wool.
Thanks for postin the vid and thanks for the Walker #17749 Dynomax info. I'm lookin for mufflers as well and wanted something that was quiet and flowed nicely. I had some Thrush SS dual chambers on the 350 I pulled from my SS. Drove my neighbors crazy! Lol! Too loud for a daily. Gonna order those Dynomax's from summit.
jmt nailed it. For your stated goals largest case you can fit straight thru type is best. As mentioned Walker Dynomax Ultra flows, Goerlich Xlerator, and I will add Magnaflows I am sure there are more. http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shop ... in&id=9346 This is what I used as it pretty much fills the rear seat floor pans and works with most gbody pipe and tail pipe kits. I used their dealer locator to locate the the nearest warehouse and phone number called and the guy had them dropped shipped direct from the factory to my door at wholesale just by asking. I didn't pay much more than the local retailer charged for regular non stainless crimped turbo mufflers. Unpolished stainless and welded seams is lasting quality.
"Turbo" type mufflers flow better than stock type also sound good and are cheaper which may fit your needs fine. I have never seen any that are stainless or have welded seems though. Chambered mufflers also flow better than stock type and are known for that "patented flowmaster sound."
Bonnewagon That Pontiac piece has been around a long time but the advise is still spot on. I like the summary in the end. But for clarity the muffler you are referring to is a straight thru type not a turbo type.
Another idea is this- I once used 2 stock V-8 single exhaust mufflers as duals. I believe I used Walker 78' Chevy Malibu 350 models as they had the biggest inlets/oulets and I guessed they would flow the most. Here's the odd part. Used alone as singles, they were bone stock silent, BUT, used as duals they had a nice little rumble. Not loud at all, just nice, like an old GTO would sound. Someone explained it as having to do with the harmonics/pulses of the system with 4 cylinders vs 8 per muffler. The motor was a Pontiac 400 and I never felt that exhaust was restrictive at all.

That explanation was correct. In a single system, the pulses from each bank get acoustically "blended". When you have independent "true" duals, you are hearing only 4 cylinders per side; giving more of a burble because each individual cylinder pulse is more distinctly audible.
Then, adding an H or X pipe to V8 duals has a similar, smoothing effect on the sound. An H or X pipe helps balance the pressure pulses and improves scavenging. And an X pipe is better than an H pipe for all-out performance.
