So i got this 79 el camino, i notice that 78 & 79s are the most different from the 5th gen el caminos, would a monte carlos ss nose be harder to fit, and would it look at good as the later el caminos with this custom application?

honestly I've never been a fan of the Monte SS nose on an elky, i think the stock elky front end looks clean as it is, but if it rocks your boat then OK.

if your going to do the swap right with GM parts than you need to change out the entire front clip, fenders, nose everything must be switched

If I remember correctly, you'll need to swap to the Monte doors and install the El Camino door glass in them as well. This way the body lines will match up. Awful lot of work.

I'd upgrade to the '81 nose if I'd change it at all. If you want something different, I'd do the 82-87 Malibu/El Camino nose with 87-90 Chevy Celebrity headlights.

I did an earlier (78) Monte clip and doors on my 83 El Camino. It takes a bit of work….here is a link showing what I had to do.

An easier way (and probably cheaper in the long run) if you want a later style nose would be to go with the aftermarket Choo Choo style nose. I thnk Honest Charlie sell them.

Just install a Choo Choo Customs nose (or an after market look-a-like). That's what I did. With the Choo Choo nose, you can keep the fenders, hood, and doors from your El Camino ( less work to get the Monte SS look!). Check my avatar.

I definitely agree with Doug on this. I don’t know what the buy in is on the Choo Choo nose, but by the time you buy a good front clip and doors and then do the body work and paint you’re probably well ahead with the Choo Choo nose.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are a lot of options for the 5th Gen El Caminos.....the real key is the quality of workmanship that goes into the project. Here’s a link to what some other folks have done with theirs.
