My El Camino has been sitting for about 10 years due to me being in the Army and away from home. I finally got it back and am curious besides changing the battery, belts, hoses, plugs, wires, tires, alternator and flushing the system what else needs to be done to get it back up to par. Also before i left i had the engine and transmission overhauled, will me trying to crank it without dumping the old fuel and transmission fluid damage my car? And since it was overhauled shouldn't it be in better condition or can 10 years have ruined it? I've recently seen advertisements about STABILT and Z-MAX supposedly they rejuvenate and lubricate the engine if this is true or if theres any product that would help please let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

It would be best to not use the gas that is in the tank if it is truly 10 years old. I don't believe its to too hard to drain or drop the tank to remove the old gas but you could also try to syphon it out and then fill it up with good gas and make sure you change the fuel filter. If your engine uses a Quadrajet carburetor, the fuel filter is inside where the fuel line attaches to the carburetor.

All those maintenance items seem reasonable if they need to be done. I like to know the oil is fresh so I would do an oil change. Can't really think of other general maintenance things to make sure it runs properly although someone else may chime in.

As far as engine rejuvenation and the like, I've used Restore Engine Restorer and I think it may help the rings seal better in an old engine, although you should not have this problem if the engine is freshly overhauled. Some people seem to use Seafoam with good results as a fuel system treatment and cleaner. They have several different products that can be used to clean your fuel system.

Sounds like it might be a pretty nice car if all your worried about is maintenance? Welcome to the board by the way.

Thanks for the reply Drogg1. For the most part its really nice the interior was reupholstered around the same time as the overhauling took place. Besides a moderate amount of dents along the driver side of the car everything else seem to be fine. About 3 years ago my brother jumped it off and it sounded great he said it just dies as soon as the jumper cables are removed due to a bad alternator and battery.
