Hello i have a 1986 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme with a 307 v8 5.7L in it and i have just purchased Flowtech Long tube headers for it. I am now looking for mufflers to accommodate the headers but am a bit confused on what type of mufflers to get. I was considering the Flowmaster Orig. 40's but i was advised by a couple people that it would be very loud. This car will be a everyday driver so i would like the noise to not be a burden but for it to sound nice. Anyone have any suggestions on what type of mufflers to purchase? Anyone have Headers to Flowmaster Orig. 40's that could give me a idea on the sound level? Thank you very much for your time and help much appreciated. - r4in

I'm pretty happy wit the Magnaflows that I have now.

And a 307 is not a 5.7l it's 5.0l. Did you get your headers for an olds motor or chevy motor?

I've got Hooker Competition headers, and 40 Series mufflers on my GP with an otherwise stock 305. The sound level is relatively loud. If I'm accelerating fairly hard, with windows down, I can't hear the passenger talking; they have to almost yell. It doesn't bother me, but then again, I'd rather listen to my exhaust noise than the radio. My car is also a daily driver, and I have been stopped by the cops once for 'excessively loud exhaust'. No ticket or anything, just a warning. So, it also depends on how strict the police are in your area.[/code]

I have the Olds 307 its actually a brand new engine and i would like to keep the sound down because i dont want to be getting pulled over by the cops for having it to loud. anyone got the "hooker aerochambers"? do they have nice sound?

I'd recommend the #16810 Hooker 2.5" mandrel bent Cat-Back dual exhaust system that i have on my 86 442 for the past 8-years. it comes with the #21502 hooker aero chamber mufflers.

Good quality system, mufflers have nice rumble, plus the tailpipes look original.

There's another member on here with Hooker Aero-Chambers and headers on his Cutlass with a 307, and they sound pretty good.
86CutlassUCF is his name I believe...

Maybe he'll chime in and post that video of the car so you can hear it...

I have Aero-Chambers on my '96 Caprice and I'm very pleased with them.

I've always had Flowmaster 40's on my 442, it had a 2.25" cat-back when I bought it, and that eventually got spliced together with headers and an X-pipe. Now with the 455, it has 3" all the way back with X-pipe and 40's again.
There's no way around the fact that it's loud, but the X-pipe really helps smooth out the tone, especially at cruising speed.

I am running Hedman coated headers and Flowmaster 40s on my '86. As everyone with them has stated they are loud, they are only 2-chamber, under hard acceleration. They mellow out at higher speed and are not too bad at cruise. Like Blake stated an X-pipe will help balance & mellow the sound out and I would suggest using one. Loud but they do sound good

If the cops / sound laws are strict in your area I wouldn't get the 40s, maybe the 50s will work? The case / overall length is a little longer since it's a 3-chamber design.
