Just found a TH 400 transmission on Craigslist. Out of a '72 Buick Electra with a 455. I'm swapping to an olds 355 and have a th250, Should I buy the th400?

Help Quick!!!

I'll throw in my 2 cents. The TH400 is a HEAVY transmission. and it requires a bit more HP just to drive it. On the upside, these things are damn near bullet proof. thats why I run one and love it.

what kind of driving will you be doing?
if it's a drag car, why not. if it's a driver, you don't need a 400, not behind a 355.

Make sure to check which tailshaft it has.

Lots of the full size cars had the medium and long tailshafts...

You'll need the short tailshaft to run it in a G-body.
You'll also need to take about 1/2" to 3/4" out of the driveshaft. Cost me about $90 to have mine cut and rebalanced.

Just city driving, may occasionally see the strip.

I'm not really sure if I want to get into shortening the driveshaft. It has been sitting for 20 years...but its only $20...($1 per year  )
